Sampling Visible Narcotic Residue Using the Toothpick Method

             NOTE: A ‘trace amount’ is
defined as a very, very small
             (almost invisible) amount of
             substance.

             The Smiths instrument
             generally detects at the 1-20
             nanogram (ng) level.

             For comparison, a single
grain of salt is ~50,000 ng.
             That’s 2000x more sample
             substance than is really
             needed.

             The instrument is designed
to cope with amounts up to
             5,000 ng. Samples larger
             than this can easily overload
             the detector.

             There should be no visible
             residue on the swab after
             sampling.
