Obituary

It is with great sadness the Club must report the recent passing of George Wilson MVO, a past
Chairman, Treasurer, Captain and Life Member of the RHCC. Like his Father and Grandfather
before him, George spent his entire career following his National Service working for the Royal
Household, firstly at Buckingham Palace, then at Windsor Castle for the final 40 years of his
working life until he retired in 1997. George played his first game for the RHCC in 1948 and his
final game some 24 years later in 1972. He made 391 appearances during this time and
captained the Club during the 1968 & 1969 seasons during which the Club played 68 games,
winning 25, losing 21, drawing 21 with one game ending in a tie. He scored a total of 1671 runs
at an average of 7.85 and took 180 wickets at an average of 14.08. He was the Club Treasurer
from 1960-1966 utilising his professional experience dealing with accounts and finance. He then
held the position of Chairman between 1969 & 1974. Over the years between then and now
George and his wife Sheila continued to be regular and very welcome visitors to the Club. This
continued until very recently when unfortunately, George’s health started to deteriorate.

The Club were proud to be able to host the reception following George’s funeral and pay our
own tribute to a man who contributed so much to our Club over so many years. His legacy and
that of his family to the RHCC is carried on through the invaluable, continuing contributions,
both on and off the f ield of his son, Peter, and grandson, Ben.
