Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers
Chief Executive Officer
Competitive Salary
Location: Kegworth, East Midlands
The Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM) has a long tradition of representing the interests
of gas engineers and managers, plus championing qualifications, technical standards and codes of
practice for the gas industry.
The Institution has 3,250 individual members and over 300 Industrial Affiliates. It has 11 Sections
including one in Ireland and one in Hong Kong. The Institution, a registered charity, is governed by
its by-laws and Royal Charter and is largely funded from membership subscriptions, the provision of
technical standards, training and technical services. Its main governing body is a Council of Trustees.
The Institution is licensed by the Engineering Council to award the professional qualifications of
Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer and Engineering Technician. The Council of the Institution
is supported by a wide range of committees formed from its members.
The Institution is seeking a new CEO to drive the Institution forwards and expand its membership base
and offering. Accountable to the Council of Trustees, the CEO will be responsible for the successful
delivery of its strategy, positioning IGEM to be a trusted advisor to policy makers. The CEO will also
be responsible for developing new products and services for members and potential growth markets,
particularly in support of the industry as it moves towards its goal of achieving net zero emissions, in
which hydrogen and carbon capture and storage will inevitably play an important part.
The person appointed will need to be highly self-motivated, have excellent interpersonal skills and the
ability to lead by example. The CEO will need to motivate a team of dedicated and committed staff with
a variety of specialist skills to further enhance the membership proposition and the external profile of
the Institution. The ability to work effectively with a diverse range of contributors and stakeholders is
also essential.
The CEO should have presence, plus the ability to build relationships with and influence senior
external stakeholders. An appreciation of charity law as applicable to a professional engineering
institution would be advantageous. The successful candidate will be appointed on a salary that reflects
the demands of the position.
This is an exciting time to be joining IGEM as the Institution positions itself as an advocate of the
industry and its role in meeting UK climate change targets, while communicating the engineering
innovation that is currently taking place across the industry.
The Institution is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to equality, diversity and inclusivity.
Applications from appropriately qualified and experienced individuals is actively encouraged from all
sections of society.
CVs with salary expectation marked “confidential and personal to addressee” should be forwarded by
email to Gordon Davies, IGEM Honorary Secretary honsec@igem.org.uk.
