The midshipman’s hitch is an excellent knot used primarily
for moorings or for providing tension on guy lines as it
creates an adjustable, strong, secure loop. It has, however,
also been used as a rescue line for people who have fallen
into the water as it will remain firm while they are pulled to
safety. As it is possible to slide the knot to a new position
and still hold firm, it is perfect for tying bales or parcels. crossIng Knots
The downside to this knot is that it may not work well
on especially stiff or slippery rope, and it is essential that it is
                pulled tight to work efficiently.

                                         Now make another
                                         identical turn, allowing
                                         the rope to lie snugly
                                         against the first turn on
                                         the left hand side.

                                         around the standing
                                         part and then tuck the
                                         end beneath itself.

                                         Tighten the knot by
                                         pulling firmly on both
                                         ends.
