agazine was founded by Eli
MD. Hooper in 1870. Hooper
built the first store in Magazine.
The town itself was named after
Mount Magazine. Prior to 1899,
the town was a mile north of
where it sits today but it moved
when the railroad laid down
tracks.

s the town grew, a school
Aand several churches
were established. In 1904,
Ouachita College established
the Magazine Academy and
it became one of the leading
educational institutions of
Western Arkansas at the time.

t the height of its population
Ain 1910, Magazine had two
banks, two newspapers, four
hotels and five physicians.
There was also a cotton gin and
a theater. Traveling shows such
as carnivals and circuses never
failed to stop in town.
A unit were also
National
State
and
Guard
headquartered in Magazine.
Magazine natives were not
shy in answering the call to
duty. Among them were three
generals, and several colonels
and majors.
