Blood Knot
r One of many knots with the name of
blood knot, this one is sometimes
called the barrel knot. It is used by
anglers to join together their fine
nylon lines. Before struggling to tie
this knot in fine fishing line, try it in a
thin cord. When made in fishing line,
it is made with plenty of turns and it
helps if the line is wetted in the mouth
to lubricate the turns so they can
work tight. Once tied and pulled tight
it is almost impossible to undo; if you
want to, you will have to resort to the
knife.
1 Overlap the two pieces of line keeping
them slightly apart in the left hand.
2 Wrap the working end of the left-hand
line round the right-hand line giving an
S-twist to the lines.
3 Tuck the working end of the line you have

just wrapped up through the small gap
kept open in you left hand.
4 Now twist the other working end round
the standing part: this should continue to
form an S-twist.
5 When you have as many twists as the
first side, tuck back through the same
place as the first end. The two ends
should point out in opposite directions.
