Jury Mast Knot

A jury mast is a temporary makeshift mast erected to

replace a mast that has been lost or damaged.
By a clever interweaving of the half hitches and a

careful pulling of loops, four points are made from
which to attach the shrouds (those ropes that
support the mast). While it is hoped that this knot

will never be needed for its proper purpose, it may be
enjoyed for its intricacy and beauty.

1 Make three hitches, each with the same crossing, laying
the left hitch over the center hitch, and the left hitch
                     under the center hitch.

                 2 Overlap the outer
                     hitches in the
                     middle of dm?

                     By interweaving
                     your fingers take

hold of the overlapped hitches in the center
and pull out to make side bights. Notice how the
bight to the right will go under and over, while the

bight to the left goes over and under.
4 Pull the top of the middle hitch out to make a top
                     bight.
                 5 The finished knot.
