I HEARD SOMETHING THAT MADE ME
CRY FOR DAYS
In one particular year, I was Chief Bridesmaid to six of my friends. At the
wedding of the last one, a mutual friend of ours worked up to me and he
said “Lola, this is the sixth wedding I am seeing you as Chief Bridesmaid.
You keep assisting all your friends to marry, meanwhile you don't even
have a boyfriend!”
Right there in his front, I broke down in tears and although he meant it as
a joke and tried to console me, I could not stop the tears.
I missed the reception of that wedding because I went home to cry. I cried
from afternoon till the next morning and when my Mum saw me that day,
she rushed me to a hospital thinking I was going to die.
I WANTED TO DIE BUT I WAS LUCKY
Truth be told, I wanted to die, in fact, I was already dead inside, because
the pain of watching your classmates, friends, colleagues, getting married,
bearing children and even going abroad was just too painful to bare. As
I'm writing this now, I can still remember how I felt.
If you have been there, I pray you'll never be there ever again. It's not
something I'll even wish my enemy's. That year, I decided never to attend
any more weddings until I did my own. It was hard, but I was determined
to make it happen no matter what.
