Definition
Fire sprinkler system is an active fire protective system consisting of a network of
piping installed in ceiling or roof and supplied with water from convenient source. It
provides decent water pressure and flowrate to a water distributing piping system
onto which fire sprinklers are connected.
Components
The components of fire sprinkler system are:
i. Control valve – It is used to stop the flow of water when the fire sprinkler
system is not active.
ii. Alarm valve – It is used to control the flow of water into fire sprinkler system
when fire sprinkler response to a fire.
iii. Sprinkler heads – It is a valve that opens when it is exposed to high
temperature and allow water flow in the area under the heads.
iv. Alarm test valve – This valve allows to test the fire sprinkler system without
setting the whole system off.
v. Motorized bell or gong – When the fire sprinkler system activates, the water
flow sets off a hammer that strikes against a bell creating a detectable alarm
signal.
