Virginia State Is The CIAA Champions; Named To Play In NCAA Div. II Game
A Black college database, The Hundred-Seven has published a list of public His- torically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that are recognized for their af- fordability.
The 16 colleges have been identified because of their lower overall costs (before and after financial aid pack- ages) compared to other sim- ilar colleges - in state and out-of-state.
The entire list of colleges can be found on the Hun- dred-Seven’s website. Among the schools on the list are Alcorn State University in Mississippi, Fort Valley
State University in Georgia and Southern University and A&M College in Louisiana.
Even with the current "HBCU Renaissance" many experts say is going on as a result of the current political climate, some families re- main resistant about sending their child to a Black college over concerns of cost. Stu- dents living in areas where there are no HBCUs are often faced with paying out- of-state tuition. Many of the schools on The Hundred- Seven list have low out-of- state tuition rates and are recognized nationally for their value.
He’s no secret, but Vir- ginia State’s Trent Cannon sure is a weapon.
The VSU running back scored three touchdowns, in- cluding two back-breaking runs in the second half, to help lead his team to a 42-19 win over Fayetteville State to claim the Central Intercolle- giate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship.
VSU remains unbeaten at 10-0 and is primed to make the Divsion II playoffs and possibly host a first-round game. It came into the game ranked third in the Super Re- gion Two rankings and the top seven get in.
Cannon broke the CIAA Championship Game rushing record with 186 yards, aided by a 73 yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 79 yarder in the fourth quarter to effectively kill the Broncos
The high powered 10-0 team was led by RB Trenton Cannon and QB Cordelral Cook.
hopes of a comeback. Quarterback Cordelral
Cook had a solid all-around game as well, throwing for 169 yards and two touch- downs and running for a 57
yard score to boot.
Cook, Cannon and their
VSU teammates handed Reggie Barlow his first championship as a head coach.

Tuskegee University Is The SIAC Champions
Tuskegee tailback Hoderick Lowe and head coach Willie Slater accept the SIAC trophy. Mean- while, Lowe’s teammates celebrate.
In her five years at Bennett College, Johnnetta Cole balanced the budget, raised millions of dollars and brought new life to a strug- gling institution.
A decade after Cole’s de- parture, the college decided on a way to honor its 14th president.
During its founders day, Bennett College formally re- named its newest campus
building for Cole. The hon- ors dorm is now the John- netta Betsch Cole Honors Residence Hall.
“You have given me an in- credible honor — to have my name on a building where students committed to excel- lence, defined as honors stu- dents, recommit themselves to soar to the heights of their possibility,” Cole said at a brief ceremony outside the dorm.
Tuskegee tailback, Hod- erick Lowe rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns, earning most valuable player honors, in Tuskegee’s 13-6 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) champi- onship win over Fort Valley State.
The Golden Tigers claimed its 31st Conference Championship in school history behind a steady dose of Hoderick Lowe, who rushed for 124 yards and scored two touch- downs.
Lowe’s first score was a six-yard option pitch that
put TU up 7-0 with 5:26 re- maining in the first quarter. Golden Tigers head coach Willie Slater won his sev- enth conference title since
2006.
Tuskegee (9-2, 7-0 SIAC)
held Fort Valley State (5-5, 5-2) with 183 yards of total offense.
