MONEY, MS —- A historical marker with information about Emmett Till has been vandal- ized, the second such attack against a memorial for him in less than nine months.
A Mississippi Freedom Trail sign in Money, where 14-year-
old Till was kidnapped and killed in 1955, had large parts of its text and photos scraped off by Monday morning.
The sign, put up in 2011, stands outside Bryant’s Gro- cery and Meat Market, the now-closed store where a white
shopkeeper said that the teen had whistled at her.
Till was tortured and killed, and his death and the acquittal of two white men put on trial for his murder galvanized the civil rights movement.
Philando Castile’s Family Reaches $3M Death Settlement
ST. PAUL, MN —- The mother of Philando Castile, who was killed last summer by a police officer from St. An- thony, Minn., reached a nearly $3 million settlement on Mon- day with that city.
The settlement came 10 days after the officer who fired the fatal shots, Jeronimo Yanez, was acquitted of second-degree manslaughter and all other charges. Mr. Castile’s case is the latest example of a police shooting of a black person leading to a legal settlement but no criminal conviction of the officer involved.

Store Owner Sentenced To 8 Years For Fatally Shooting Shoplifter
SPANAWAY, WA —- A con- venience store owner in Wash- ington state will serve more than eight years in prison for shooting and killing a would- be shoplifter who was trying to flee the store after a physical run-in with the owner.
Min Kim, the owner of the Pacific Quick Shop in Spanaway, appeared in court last Friday to be sentenced for the fatal March 2016 shooting of 21-year-old Jakeel Rashon Mason.
"I'm here to take responsi-
bility for my actions in taking Mason's life," said Kim, who had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. "I accept the consequences. I did not have the right to take his life.”
Mason was shot in the back after trying to steal a package of cigarettes. He died before first responders could arrive.
Just before the shooting, the 31-year-old owner had gone outside to tell a group of guys standing around to leave.
Inside the store, Mason was
seen on video reaching around the counter trying to grab ciga- rettes. When Kim came back into his store, he had a gun pointed at the suspect.
Mason put both hands in the air and Kim holstered his weapon before punching the attempted thief in the face.
The two men started fighting and fell to the floor. As Mason freed himself and tried to leave the store, Kim took out his weapon and fired several shots.
Mason died in the doorway of the store before police could arrive.
