2018 Violent Deaths In Review
Violent Deaths In Black Community Reduced In 2018

While looking back over the calendar year of 2018, acts of violence once again domi- nated the news. Law enforce- ment in Hillsborough County investigated a total of 72 deaths, including some mur- der-suicide cases.
Of the 27 deaths the Tampa Police Department investi- gated, 13 Black males and 2 Black females met violent deaths. They have 12 cases that remain open.
Of the 45 deaths the Hills- borough County Sheriff’s Of- fice investigated, 14 Black males and 5 Black females met violent deaths. They have 11 cases unsolved.
October was the deadliest month with a total of 10 deaths. The deaths occurred during the year in the follow- ing months.
The first violent deaths of the year were the shooting deaths of Julissa Jackson, 15, and 25-year-old Jyhaad Grant on January 1st. They were shot during an incident at 5809 N. 50th Street, by two security guards. Their deaths have been ruled justifiable homicides.
On January 8th, Tampa Po- lice investigated the double murder of Daniel Cagle, 23, whose address was not listed, and 61-year-old Bernard Marsonek, who reportedly lived at the residence. The murders took place at 8125 N. Marks Street. The case re- mains open.
Shortly after midnight, Tuesday, January 9th, 34-year- old Gerald Lee Gay was stabbed to death during a do- mestic disturbance. He al- legedly slashed the tires on a vehicle and attempted to enter a home at 1513 E. Frierson Av- enue.

35, died on January 12th, after he was stabbed during an al- tercation at the intersection of N. 22nd Street and E. Crenshaw Street.
Elijah Moore was killed on January 17th, while at 3714 Carroway Street. Detectives with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24- year-old Javon Turner and charged him with first-degree murder.
Juanita D. Solorzano, 33, and 24-year-old Alexis Martinez, were found dead in a home at 2611 14th Avenue, SE, in Ruskin on January 24th.
Detectives arrested Ms. Samona Ramey on January 29th, and charged her with two counts of first-degree murder. McKinsie Lyons, 39, was ar- rested in September by the Kentucky State Police, in Car- roll County, Kentucky. They were charged with the double murder of Solorzano, her unborn child, and Martinez.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 24th, Tampa Police responded to a shooting in the 2600 block of E. Emma. When officers ar- rived at the intersection of E. Emma and N. 26th Street, they
found 20-year-old Malik Torres, who suffered several gunshot wounds. He died at a local hospital. The case re- mains unsolved.
The first of several murder- suicides took place on Febru- ary 2nd. Robert Rosa killed
his wife, Beata Rosa, and then himself. The incident took place at 1022 Spindle Palm Way.
Sean Anderson was charged in the death of Win- dall Scott. The murder took place at 6907 Spencer Circle on February 3rd.
William Dennard was arrested for causing the death
of Barney Jinks. The inci- dent occurred at 3207 Orient Road on February 6th.
Detectives with the Tampa Police Department responded to 5217 Sonora Court in refer- ence to a body being found on February 16th.
The death was ruled a homicide and the victim was identified as Awil Ali 50. Po- lice arrested 18-year-old Is- mael Ali with the murder.
During an altercation at 4308 James L. Redman Park- way, James Meeks report- edly stabbed Moses Wilson to death. The murder took place on February 24th.
The first murder in March took place at 3940 Knights Griffin Road on March 12th. Richard Bliss reportedly shot William Duncan dur- ing an altercation. Shante Duncan then shot Bliss. Bliss died of his injuries at the scene. Ms. Duncan was given a letter of release in the case.
and his daughter, Ron’niveya O’Neal. He was charged with the attempted murder of his son, Ronnie O’Neal, Jr.
Early on the morning of March 28th, police received a report of shots being fired at 415 W. Park Avenue. When of- ficers arrived they discovered that 39-year-old William F. Alexander had been shot. He died outside his residence.
James West was killed on April 1st while at 14007 N. 15th Street. Detectives arrested Wresley Torres and charged him with the murder.
On April 1st, Timothy O. Wyatt, 41, of Forest Park, Georgia, was killed by Tampa Police after he fired several shots at officers. They were at- tempting to arrest him on an active warrant when he led them on a chase and began shooting at them. He was wanted for a murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Dave George, 47, owner of Unique Auto Detailing, 2630 E. Lake Avenue, was at his business when a man rode up on a bicycle and shot him on April 4th. Two days later, Dwayne McGriff, 31, was charged with the murder.
Tampa Police investigated the stabbing death of Gilbert Serna on April 4th. Serna was riding in a truck with his friend. Serna allegedly spit out the window and onto the BMW of 44-year-old Teddy Baltimore Smith. The two
men argued and Smith al- legedly stabbed Serna to death.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office investigated the murder of Devin Scriven on April 5th. It occurred at 1541 Kingsway Road, North and re- mains an open case.
On April 15th, Grover Wills, a popular high school athlete, died while at 612 Lumsden Road. Samuel Morrissey was arrested and charged with his murder.
Tampa Police arrested 40- year-old Keith Mauga and charged him in connection with the death of 40-year-old Mathew Callahan. The inci- dent took place at the corner of Gandy Blvd., and Clark Av- enue on April 11th.
Ms. Waitecia Howard,
26, was charged with second- degree murder in the stabbing
death of 24-year-old Jayvion Parker that took place at 1434 Estelle Street, and fol- lowed an argument. The inci- dent took place April 15th.
Hillsborough County de- tectives arrested Megan Rand and charged her with the death of her infant son, Brennan Rand. The death took place at 9715 Long Meadow Drive on April 24th.
The murder of Thant Oo remains an active investiga- tion with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The murder took place at 4200 E. Fletcher Avenue, #440.
On March 19th, Ronnie O’Neal was arrested after he killed the mother of his chil- dren, Ms. Kenyatta Barron,
