New Pre K-8 School To Bear Name Of Dr. Carter G. Woodson
DR. CARTER G. WOODSON ... Father of “Black History”
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Tuesday, the Hillsbor- ough County School Board voted unanimously to re- name a school. The Board de- cided 6-0 that the new school will bear the name of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of Black History.”
Woodson PreK-8 will come into existence next year when the merger between Cahoon Elementary School and Van Buren Middle School will be completed. The schools are being com- bined to better serve the needs of students in the North Tampa Rowlett Park neighborhoods. Ms. Ovette Wilson will serve as its Prin- cipal.
Ms. Tamara Sham- burger, School Board Dis- trict 5 Representative said, “I’d like to thank the commu- nity for getting involved in the renaming of Van Buren Middle and Cahoon Elemen- tary. Many great names were

“We are pleased to have
the new combined K-8 school named after the “Father of Black History,” Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Wood- son is important not only to Blacks, but to all Americans. Because of his work and pas- sion, America celebrates an entire month of Black His- tory. Having a school named after Dr. Woodson is an ever-present reminder to our students and residents of the importance and significant contributions of Blacks in this country.”
Fred Hearns, a commu- nity activist who spearheaded the drive to name the school said, “I think this is a victory for everyone in Hillsborough County, it especially showed the respect the Board has for Ms. Shamburger. She worked really hard to get a unanimous vote.
“After the vote, there was dead silence. We were all in shock. Chairman Sally Harris had to ask if anyone was going to clap. I couldn’t
