Jameis Winston Is Keynote Speaker At Suit Up And Show Up Event
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Several years ago, a 17- year-old high school junior was killed while attending an event in East Tampa. The young man, John Single- ton, was an innocent by- stander, struck by a bullet intended for someone else.
Singleton was also an ac- tive participant in the Corpo- ration to Develop Communities of Tampa,` Inc., (CDC of Tampa, Inc.), Youth Leadership Movement Program at the time of his death.
Ernest Coney, Jr., Pres- ident and CEO of the CDC of Tampa, Inc., purchased the suit for Singleton’s funeral. It was the young man’s first suit.
The death had such an im- pact on Coney that he be- came determined “a young

man would not be receiving his first suit on the occasion of his funeral.” And from the impact of Singleton’s death came the birth of the “Suit Up & Show Up” Initiative.
On Friday, January 19th, the CDC of Tampa, Inc., will host their Fifth Annual “Suit Up & Show Up” Initiative.
The event will be held at

the Hillsborough Community College Ybor Campus, Stu- dent Services Building, 1320 E. Palm Avenue, from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. The theme for the event is “New Dreams ... New Leaders.”
The program is designed to change the attitude of young men in the community through a discussion about “Suiting Up and Showing Up for the Roles in Your Life,” Coney said.
Ernest Hooper,
Tampa Times Columnist, will introduce the keynote speaker, Jameis Winston, Quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Winston became the youngest athlete to win the 2013 Heisman Trophy while at Florida State University. He was regarded as an out- standing athlete at FSU, where he led the Seminoles to a BCS National Champi- onship.
He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015.
A group of panelists will
