 KENDRICK ATKINS TYLER JOHNSON
Two Tampa men were ar- rested Tuesday and charged with several crimes. They are accused of robbing a gas station in Ruskin and shooting at a store clerk while on Interstate 75.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began with the theft of cigarettes at the Race- Trac Service Station, 3105 Col- lege Avenue. Police said Kendrick Atkins, 19, of Riverview, took 4 cartons of cigarettes by distracting the clerk and ran out of the store and got into a stolen 2008 Dodge Charger that was driven by 22-year-old Tyler John- son, of Tampa.
Later, the clerk was on her way home and recognized the car from the robbery earlier. She obtained the license plate number of the vehicle while driving on Interstate 75. Atkins and Johnson are said to have realized she was behind them and Atkins began shoot- ing at her. The clerk was not in- jured, police said.
The clerk notified police and deputies found the vehicle at the Allegro Palms Apartment
Complex, 5501 Legacy Crescent Place, in Riverview. Both men jumped out of the car, but were caught after a short foot pur- suit.
Police said the vehicle was stolen during a carjacking that had taken place on November 11th. Deputies also recovered two firearms from the vehicle, one of which had been reported stolen during a vehicle burglary reported on June 17th.
Atkins was charged with robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, dis- charging a firearm from a vehi- cle, being a felon in possession of a firearm, grand theft, and violation of parole, among other charges. He also had an out-of-county warrant issued for his arrest.
Johnson was charged with driving with his license cancelled, suspended, or re- voked, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, dis- charging a firearm from a vehi- cle, being a felon in possession of a firearm, failure to appear, and other charges.
Both men are being held at the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.
