BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are invited to partici- pate in the Future City Com- petition. The deadline to take part in the competition is Oc- tober 31st.
The theme for the contest this year is “Waste Not, Want Not.” The students will address in an authentic, real world question, “How can we make the world a better place?”
The contest focuses on waste management systems and targets the four Rs of waste management --- Re- duce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. Tampa is one of 37 re- gions across the nation par- ticipating in the nation-wide competition.
The students are encour- aged to design waste manage- ment systems for residential
use and small businesses by looking at issues such as col- lection, separation, process- ing, recycling, health and safety, energy efficiency, envi- ronmental impact and cost.
Working in a team with an educator and engineer men- tor, students present their waste management solutions and vision of their future city in a virtual city design (using SimCityTM software); a 1,500 word city description; a scale model of their city (built with recycled materials); and in a short presentation to a panel of STEM professionals.
More than 40,000 stu- dents, representing 1,350 schools, take part in the Fu- ture City® Competition na- tionally.
Anyone wishing to regis- ter or to learn more about the competition can visit www.fu- turecity.org.
Moffitt Cancer Center Seeks Breast Cancer Survivors
