Lakeland Police have re- ported that a teenager was shot and killed by a security guard Saturday morning after he al- legedly fired what turned out to be pellet shots into the guard’s face.
Police said the 15-year-old was shot at Willow Glen Apart- ments shortly before 5 a.m.
According to police, security guard Shawn Plain, 19, said he was in the laundry room of the complex charging his phone when he saw a young man come in and point a handgun at him. Plain said he felt several stinging sensations on his face and thought he had been shot in the face, police said.
Plain told police he saw what he thought were several other people with handguns looking into the laundry room. That’s when he drew his weapon and chased them into the parking lot. Police said that’s when Plain shot the teenager.
The other suspects fled from the scene and have not been lo- cated.
Plain reportedly went back into the laundry room to get his phone and call 9-1-1. He then went to the teen who reportedly asked him to call an ambulance and apologized for shooting at him, police said.
The teen, who has not been identified, died as a result of the gunshot injury.
Plain was hospitalized and treated for two pellet wounds. Police did recover a Ruger pel- let handgun on the pavement in the area.
