Historic Cigar Factory Destroyed By Fire
Defenders Of Confederate Flag Hold Rally In Tampa
As most people in Hillsborough County were at the beach, shooting off fireworks, or barbecuing in their backyards for July 4th, about 200 Confederate flag supporters gathered during a ceremony put on by the Sons of Confederate Veter- ans at Confederate Memorial Park on U. S. 92.
Beneath the 50-foot Confederate flag near I-75, a rally was held in protest the recent criticism of the flag and requests to have it removed from government buildings.
Since the flag was erected in 2008, it has drawn criticism from community organizations, but after the massacre of 9 people inside a Charleston, South Carolina church, the spot has gotten more publicity when it was discovered a 21-year- old Confederate flag waving, white supremacist confessed to the murders.
In Hillsborough County, Commissioners will discuss whether to remove a small battle flag from the lobby of the County Center in Downtown Tampa.
At the rally Saturday, people came from across the state, some waving their own Confederate flags attended. They saluted the flag, then broke out into a chorus singing “Dixie.”
Many in the crowd wore tee-shirts identifying themselves as members of the Dukes of Hillsborough.
At 12:32 a. m. Sunday, Tampa Fire Rescue firefighters were called to a fire at a vacant cigar factory on 26th Street in Palmetto Beach.
What was once the V. Guerrieri Cigar Fac- tory was completely destroyed by fire, accord- ing to Tampa Fire Rescue.
The building was constructed in 1899, and had been purchased by 201 Twenty-Sixth Street North LLC in Atlanta, Georgia, who were going to renovate the building and con- vert it into affordable housing.
The cause of the fire has not been deter- mined, and investigators said that process may take a while.
A resident who lives across the street from the building said the fire started as a small fire on one side of the building, and in matter of seconds, erupted into a blaze. Residents across the street or along Clarke Street said they could feel the heat because the fire was so in- tense.
The vacant cigar factory served as naval bar- racks and a training facility during World War II. In 2000, a small fire broke out inside the building, but very little was damaged.
Residents said although the building was boarded up, they occasionally would see some- one going in and out of the building.
This historic cigar factory was destroyed by a fire Sunday.
