Sentences Of Non-Violent Inmates
President Barack Obama
is slated to sign orders in the next few weeks to release scores of federal inmates imprisoned on nonviolent drug charges.
Upon signing the orders, the President will likely reduce more sentences at one time than any president in nearly 50 years, the report says. The total number of commutations for President Obama’s historic presidency could surpass 80, but more than 30,000 federal inmates have come forward in

response to his administra- tion’s call for clemency applica- tions.
The move is part of a broader effort by the President to right excesses of the past, when elected officials seeking to be tough on crime imprisoned scores of mostly young African- American and Hispanic men for minor crimes. Now, with many Republicans and Democ- rats agreeing that the federal government went too far, Pres- ident Obama is poised to use
his clemency power to grant the release of the prisoners.
“It’s a time when conserva- tives and liberals and libertari- ans and lots of different people on the political spectrum” have “come together in order to focus attention on excessive sentences, the costs and the like, and the need to correct some of those excesses,” Neil Eggleston, the White House counsel who recommends clemency petitions to Mr. Obama, said.
Some lucky Girl Scouts got the ultimate camping experience last Tuesday: an overnight in tents pitched on the White House South Lawn.
It was the first time that one of the country's most well-known expanses of manicured grass was turned into a campground, an " excited First Lady Obama said as she greeted the 50 Girl Scouts who snagged coveted invitations to the outdoor sleepover.
"This is something you can tell your kids and your grand- kids," said Mrs. Obama, who appeared giddy with excitement
as she pointed to the celebrated white building looming above rows of carefully arranged blue and white tents. "Do you under- stand the impact, the importance of this moment today? It's excit- ing."
As honorary national presi- dent of the Girl Scouts, the first lady welcomed the fourth- graders for the evening, which was arranged as part of her Let's Move initiative against childhood obesity. One component of the program encourages kids and their families to take advantage of the outdoors.
First Daughter Malia Obama Interns For HBO Show
Malia Obama landed the dream internship of a lifetime this summer — working with Lena Dunham on the set of HBO’s hit series Girls.
“She’s a fan, and she men- tioned that to Lena [Dunham] when she came to the White House,” a source close to the pro- duction told Us Weekly.
Malia, who turned 17 on Sat- urday, July 4, has already been spotted out and about in Brook- lyn neighborhood Williamsburg, delivering coffee for the cast and crew and helping to keep the public away from the set, accord- ing to TMZ.
But despite her young age, this isn’t Malia’s first foray into the entertainment industry. Last summer, she worked as a pro- duction assistant for Halle Berry’s CBS show Extant.
She also currently has an in- ternship at a fashion house, a source told Us.
Malia is set to graduate from

President’s Former Speechwriter Claims He Secretly Married Gay Couple In The White House
During a special presentation of the popular live storytelling podcast “The Moth Radio Hour” at this year’s Aspen Ideas festi- val, " former Obama speech- writer Jon Lovett shared a story about how, years before gay marriage would become legal na- tionwide, he secretly performed a same-sex marriage at the White House.
Lovett, who also previously served as Hillary Clinton’s speechwriter during her time in the Senate as well as her first presidential campaign, worked for President Obama for three years before leaving Washington for Hollywood in 2011.“I remem-
bered that I worked at the White House, and I could give tours any time I want,” Lovett recalled in Aspen. So he decided to use that privilege to carry out a super se- cret operation: performing a first same-sex marriage at the White House.
I said, ‘Steve, do you take Justin to be your lawfully wed- ded husband? And Justin, do you take Steve?’”
“We were very nervous. They were nervous because they were getting married. I was nervous because I snuck into my boss’ house to perform a wedding against his wishes in his back- yard,” he said.
