Organizations Unite To Host HCSO Youth Leadership Camp
Last month, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office entered into a part- nership with The Dream Center to offer a Youth Leadership Class.
The youngsters enjoyed a week of activities where they participated in var- ious activities with Hillsborough County deputies.
The deputies played sports and games with the youngsters in the hopes of creating an atmosphere of fun and casual interaction. The goal of the camp was to establish a partnership with the children from the community in an ef- fort to build trust and allow for an open exchange of thoughts and concerns.
In addition to leadership classes taught to the middle and high school stu- dents. The education and wellness segment of the program was provided by More Health, Inc.
The youngsters were also introduced to different aspects of law enforce- ment. The Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit, Canine Unit, and Bomb Disposal Team all showed some "tools of the trade."
This camp was a step in removing the barrier of the uniform. This allowed the youngsters to see the deputies as people. As these groups of people get to know each other, they were successful in creating an atmosphere of common experiences, created bonds, and a level of trust between the adults in law en- forcement and the children residing in the area under the jurisdiction of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
As we continue to engage with the citizens of Hillsborough County, we con- tinue to build long term relationships of trust and mutual respect.
The camp culminated in a ceremony on July 23rd, where youngsters were presented Youth Leadership Camp certificates.
