Project LINK’s Community Arts Mural Project (C.A.M.P.) was to serve 10 youths be- tween the ages of 14 and 18 with summer activities within the fine and practical arts in- dustry.
The program was held dur- ing the summer, from June 2002 until August 2002, and
residents were interviewed as well as stakeholders for his- tory facts of West Tampa.
Project LINK Director, Tina Young, said the next step was to assess the condi- tion, size and structure of the selected surface that was to be painted.
“The information was com-
piled from selected West Tampa residents and creative design sessions were held to be sketched on the designated building.
“The C.A.M.P. Project was an innovative art-based employment program that nurtures the artistic skill set of talented teenagers while teaching them a strong work ethic, sense of worth, and a history lesson on the commu- nity they live in, and at the same time provide a high quality arts education program.”
Young said the experience provided the youth with a lasting sense of their accom- plishments through the pub- lic art program and familiarity of a professional exhibition.
“The contribution of the students gave them a new sense of confidence in their creative abilities.”
The mural design at Sal- cines Park consists of the city’s prosperous beginnings, recognized contributors, and some popular buildings within the West Tampa com- munity. The time spans from the 19th century until 2002.
Some of the establishments shown on the mural are the Cazi Theater, Club 77, Grace’s Place, the 4th of July Café, Cozy Corner, Clara Frye Hospital, and First Baptist Church of West Tampa.
The faces on the mural de- picted include Judge George Edgecomb, Emil- iano Salcines, Hugh C. Macfarlane, Mayor Fer- nando Figueredo, Clara Frye, Moses White, and Jetie B. Wilds.
The arrangement allows the viewer to have insight of what life was like during the emergence of the city. Scenes from seniors playing check- ers, cigar factory workers, children playing in the streets, and an alligator are all a part of the mural.
Chon Mosley, the lone professional on the project, is a high skilled craftsman and artist with over 20 years of experience in mural painting and public art. He has 40 public projects to his credit.
The student artists who painted the mural, along with the schools they attended, were: Tiffany Cooper (Plant); Vanessa Guevara (Blake); Brittany Payton (Blake); Kelly MacDonald (Jefferson); Amanda Pu- choon (Leto); Joshua Davis (Blake), Vanessa Martinez (Blake); Mario Hall (Blake); Ebony Wel- don (Jefferson), and Jason Mosley (Leto).
On Wednesday, February 10th, HOPE NOW, City of Tampa’s, Housing and Com- munity Development Divi- sion, Housing & Education Alliance, CDC of Tampa Inc., Tampa Bay CDC and Neigh- borhood Home Solutions
