Law School Program Honored With ABA’s Alexander Award For Pipeline Diversity
WASHINGTON --- The American Bar Association Council for Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Educational Pipeline has selected the Uni- versity of California Davis School of Law’s King Hall Out- reach Program (KHOP) as the recipient of its 2016 Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Award For Excel- lence in Pipeline Diversity.
The award, which recog- nizes exemplary leadership in pipeline work by an individual or organization, will be pre- sented at the ABA Midyear Meeting on Friday, Feb. 5, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. The award honors those demonstrating success working along the educational pipeline in a collaborative ap- proach involving more than one segment of the continuum from K12 to high school to col- lege to law school to the prac- tice.
“The University of Califor- nia Davis School of Law’s King Hall Outreach Program is an example of pipeline program- ming that optimizes the kind of efforts that the Pipeline Coun- cil hopes to continue to en- courage and foster,” Council
Chair Kenneth G. Stan- dard said.
KHOP, established in 2001, is a unique program that helps first-generation college stu- dents and economically disad- vantaged students prepare for the law school admissions process. In addition to provid- ing mentoring and pre-law ad- vising during the school year, the program takes eligible col- lege juniors and seniors through summer sessions in which they learn writing, ana- lytical and logical reasoning skills and study techniques for taking the Law School Admis- sion Test (LSAT), in addition to exploring career paths avail- able to law school graduates.
To date, 240 students have successfully completed the two-year program, and 100 students have completed at least one year. Among KHOP program alumni, 99 percent have graduated from a four- year institution. Forty-one per- cent are enrolled or have graduated from a law program. In 2014, the KHOP received the California State Bar Educa- tion Pipeline Award for its role in diversifying the legal profes- sion.
The University of South Florida will soon offer a unique amenity to students, faculty and staff that will change the face of campus in a reflection of the university’s continual focus on student success.
On Thursday, the Florida Board of Governors (BOG), which oversees the State Uni- versity System of Florida, ap- proved plans for Publix Super Markets to build an approxi- mately 29,000-square-foot store on the USF campus in Tampa.
The project represents the first on-campus location in Florida for the Southeastern- based grocer – supporting a mutually beneficial public- private partnership that en- hances the transformative living-learning community to be built on the north side of campus. It’s also a first-of-its-
kind across the country, as this will be the first Publix lo- cation fully integrated into a student housing village on a college campus.
USF President Judy Genshaft said, “The entire campus community is thrilled and excited to welcome Publix – one of Florida’s most re- spected companies – to our campus.
“Our students’ top request was to bring a grocery store to campus so that we could cre- ate a healthy living and learn- ing environment that fully supports them in their goals
and ambitions. This Publix location will bring a great di- mension to our new student village and create a vibrant and welcoming environment on the Tampa campus.”
Maria Brous, Publix Di- rector of Media and Commu- nity Relations said, “We are excited to be joining the USF family in their new student village.
“As strong supporters of the University and student life, we are looking forward to extending our partnership and bringing our in-store ex- perience on campus.”
