MR. ROBERT MARTIN BODDEN, SR. Sunrise: June 23, 1935 – Sunset: September 22, 2015
On June 23, 1935 in Mo- bile, AL, Robert M. Bodden (Bob) was the second of seven children born to James McKinley Bodden, Sr. and Marina R. Bodden. Bob’s fa- ther relocated his family to Tampa, FL, where he and his siblings grew up. He at- tended St. Peter Claver Catholic School from the first through the ninth grade, and attended Middleton Sen- ior High School. He gradu- ated from Middleton Senior High School in June of 1953.
In July of 1954, he en- listed in the US Navy. During his career, he studied and re- ceived his Bachelor’s Degree from National University, in Health Care Administration.
While attending St. Peter Claver during Junior High School, a pretty young lady named Della, often walked by the school grounds and caught the attention of Bobby as he was affection- ately known to her. It wasn’t until later in high school at a football game that a mutual friend would introduce him and her to each other from which they became high school sweethearts, and that was the beginning of a life- long friendship and true love. The two became one in Holy Matrimony on Novem- ber 8, 1954. This unity was the beginning of a 60-year, life-long journey and com- mitment to being a loving
husband, father and provider.
On March 31, 1955, Bob and Della were blessed with their first child, Robert M. Bodden, Jr. God continued to bless them with 8 more children, which gave them 5 boys and 4 girls. His family was his pride and joy.
After joining the Navy, he was sent to San Diego, CA, where he completed basic training “boot camp.” He continued on to becoming a Hospital Corpsman and was appointed to the top of the enlisted rank as a Master Chief Petty Officer on Sept. 16, 1976. He served in the Vietnam War and was de- ployed many times over seas. His commitment and duty to the Navy required him to spend many days, weeks and months away from his fam- ily. He served in the Navy 31 years, 6 months, 4 days and 4 hours, as he would say when- ever asked, ‘how long were you in the Navy?’ He was a man of valor and served his country well.
He enjoyed playing tennis and shared that enjoyment with his 4 oldest children. They were members of the Mountain View Tennis Club in South East San Diego for many years. Although he had 9 kids and several grandkids, he managed to participate in many of their activities, such as the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, tennis matches, soft- ball, little league baseball and football.
As time went on, Bob picked up the sport of golfing and riding motorcycles. He loved riding his Ultra Classic Electra Glide Harley David- son, “My Baby,” and his Fat Boy Lo Harley Davidson.
He grew up in the Catholic Church. He trusted in God and was a faithful ser- vant. He was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church in San Diego for over 30 years. He was a dedicated member of the choir. Bob loved to sing and wanted to share his bass voice with all who would listen. He also participated as a member of The Knights of St. Peter Claver, San Diego Council
#371, where he served as the Grand Knight. Bob was a long-time active member in good standing in the follow- ing organizations: Fidelity #10 served as Past Worship- ful Master; San Diego Consis- tory #91 as Past Commander in Chief; Azeem, Temple #102 (formally known as Isis Temple #102) served as Past Illustrious Potentate; Mount Moriah #4 served as Past Ex- cellent High Priest; James A. McElroy Royal and Select #3.
Bob’s parents, James McKinley Bodden and Ma- rina R. Bodden preceded him in death, along with his wife of 60 years, Delphina L. Bod- den, his fourth child, Eliza- beth Ann Bodden, his youngest brother, Dolan M. Bodden and his older brother, James M. Bodden, Jr., sisters-in-law, Brownie and Dorothy J.
