Tuskegee University’s 5th President Passes
Hurricane Matthew Threatens Islands, Governor Warns Floridians To Prepare
Dr. Benjamin F. Pay- ton was the brother of Tampa resident, Mrs. Mary Payton Padgett.
Dr. Benjamin F. Pay- ton, Fifth President of Tuskegee University, passed on Wednesday, September 8th, 2016, in Estero, FL.
Dr. Payton served as President from 1981 -2010 and became President Emer- itus on August 1, 2010. In ad- dition to continuing the University’s legacy of exem- plary leadership, during his tenure, he:
• Established the Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Cen- ter for Aerospace Science En- gineering and Health Education;
• Launched Tuskegee Uni- versity’s first Ph.D. programs (Materials Science and Engi- neering and Integrated Bio- sciences);
• Developed the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care;
• Launched the Tuskegee University C. Alfred “Chief” Anderson Department of Aviation Science;
• Developed the Tuskegee University Kellogg Confer- ence Center;
• Restructured the aca- demic programs into five col- leges and reorganized all programs;
• Successfully completed a $150 million Capital Cam- paign by raising $169 million and is now completing an ad- ditional $60 million cam- paign, the Legacy Campaign.
• Reconstructed and reno- vated the entire campus, in- cluding new parking,

roadways, library, science building, student residence halls and apartments for stu- dent on-campus living; and enclosed it all with beautiful brick and cast-iron fences and gates, including a dra- matic new set of campus en- trances and exits.
A native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Dr. Payton received the B. A. degree with honors from South Carolina State University in 1955; the B. D. degree from Harvard University in 1958; the M. A. degree from Columbia Uni- versity in 1960; and the Ph.D. degree from Yale University in 1963.
Survivors include one son,
Mark Steven (Christiane) Payton; one daughter, Deb- orah Elizabeth Payton; four grandchildren, and three brothers and three sisters. He was the brother of Tampa resident, Mary Payton Padgett, wife of the late Otis F. Padgett and sister- in-law of Rubin E. Padgett.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at 1:00 p. m. in the Tuskegee University Chapel, Tuskegee, Alabama.
As residents in Haiti, Ja- maica, and Cuba brace them- selves for the arrival of Hurricane Matthew, Governor Rick Scott urges Floridians to be pre- pared.
On Monday, Governor Scott was briefed by the Florida Division of Emer- gency Management and the National Hurricane Center. At the time, Hurricane Matthew was rated as a Cate- gory 4 hurricane.

Community Meeting
Greenridge and Delaney Creek monthly association meeting will be held Tues- day, October 4, 2016, at 7 p. m. The meeting is held the first Tuesday of each month at the Emanuel P. Johnson Community Center, 5858 South 78th Street, Tampa, 33619.

“This is a serious and life- threatening storm. This storm is catastrophic and if it hits our state, we could see impacts that we have not seen in many years. Even though the storm’s projected path is just east of our state, no one should take this lightly.
“Storms change fast and Hurricane Matthew could hit Florida as early as Wednesday. At this time, there have been no evacua- tion orders in Florida, but
that could change quickly. Please stay alert and watch your local news and listen to your local officials for protec- tive actions and emergency messages,” Governor Scott said.
Hurricane Matthew is expected to produce 15 to 25 inches of rain across south- ern Haiti and the southwest- ern portion of the Dominican Republic, with possible iso- lated amounts of 40 inches, the National Hurricane Cen- ter in Miami said.
Florida Beverage Association Second Year Of Community Grant Program
FBA supports healthy and environmentally sus- tainable communities
The Florida Beverage As- sociation (FBA) announces the commencement of the second year of its Florida Beverage Association Grant Program. The grant program provides support to organi- zations and programs that promote nutrition, physical activity and health and well- ness initiatives, as well as en- vironmental sustainability programs.
Grant applications should be submitted by October 31, 2016. In order to be considered for a grant, all nominees must meet the requirements listed in the “Grant Program Criteria” found on the FBA website at
www.flabev.org. Most grants awarded through the FBA program will be for $25,000 or less. However, special pro- grams and unique circum- stances may justify a larger grant.
In addition, some grant applications may be eligible for a matching grant from the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America (ABFHA).
All applications will be re- viewed by the FBA Grant Subcommittee. Grant recipi- ents will be selected and no- tified by the FBA Board of Directors by December 31, 2016.
