Promotion Ceremony Held For Tampa Colonel

A Tampa young woman, graduate of Hillsborough High School and the U. S. Mil- itary Academy, graduating with a degree in Mathematics, has been honored in a Promo- tion Ceremony conducted by LTG Aundre F. Pigee.
The ceremony honoring
Colonel Marshanna M. (Bain) Gispson was held in Pentagon Auditorium. The event was witnessed by her family from around the coun- try.
Currently battling cancer that is in remission following surgery earlier this year, Colonel Gipson has still ful- filled her duties as an officer of the military.
Colonel Gipson has as- sumed duties as Readiness Chief, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4. Previously, she commanded the 1916th Support Battalion at the Na- tional Training Center in Fort Irwin, California.

Colonel Gipson has held many challenging assign- ments, serving throughout the United States and in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea.
Her military education in- cludes: the Quartermaster Of- ficer Basic Course, petroleum Officer Course, Combined Arms Services Staff School and Joint Professional Mili- tary Education II Course. Col. Gipson also holds a Master’s degree in Business Adminis- tration from Cameron Univer- sity.
Her awards and decora- tions include the Bronze Star Medal, defense Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 OLC), Meritorious Medal (with 3 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (with 1 OLC), Joint Service Achievement Medal and Army Achievement Medal (with 1 OLC).
As a student at Hillsbor- ough High School, Col. Gip- son graduated #3 in her class (1991) of 376 students. At that time, she held several distinc- tions: 1st Black, 1st female and
1st Cadet to receive the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for achievement in 23 years. She was accepted into the U. S. Military Academy at West Point without having to go through the Congressional in- terviews, her then Senior Army Instructor, Lt. Col. McInnis said. She was very active in the JROTC organiza- tions.
Family Attends Ceremony
Col. Gipson was sur- rounded by numerous family members for the ceremony. She is married to Tyrone L. Gipson and they have 4 chil- dren: Anthony, Tyshae, Tyra and Tyrone, Jr. Her parents are Patricia Bain and Ezekiel Bain of Tampa; siblings: Dashia, Malissa Peterson, Elizabeth An- derson and Dr. Rashondra LeVarity; aunts: LaFrances Baker, Conselee Stand- berry and Dr. Olivia Shep- herd; and her mother-in law, Ella Gipson.
Winners Claim Prizes In 10th Shuffleboard Tournament

Each month the Tampa Shuffleboard organization host a tournament for its sen- ior citizens. The purpose of the tournament is to allow representatives from differ- ent areas of the city to display their skills.
Recently, the organization held its 10th Portable Shuffle- board Tournament, in which four ladies claimed the top prizes.
The two first place win- ners were: Ms. Earlene Cohen and Ms. Vonnie Scott. The second place bragging rights were earned by, Ms. Connie Bowen, and Ms. Linda Cotney.
The ladies represent the Spring Hill Community Cen- ter, Fair Oaks Community Center, and Ragan Park Community Center, respec-

for East Tampa residents. Anyone interested in learning to play shuffleboard can come to Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Avenue. Scott teaches the game to senior citizens on Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. He also teaches the game at Cyrus Greene Community Center on Thursday, from 1 p.m.

The teams currently use temporary or portable shuf- fleboard to play during the month. However, Scott has been campaigning to obtain a permanent shuffleboard
