Former Middleton Grad Wins Honors In Track And Field

#25 Ranked Bethune Wins ‘Senior Day’ Game
NCAA ranked Bethune- Cookman (#25) closed out its 2015 home schedule Saturday with a 38-14 Senior Day vic- tory over Morgan State before a Municipal Stadium crowd of 7,461.
Tampa native, Quentin Williams, one of 20 Wild- cats seniors honored in pre-game ceremonies, threw for 257 yards and a touchdown as the Wild- cats (8-2 overall, 6-1 Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference) pulled away from a one-score game at halftime to keep their post-season hopes alive heading into a bye week for the upcoming spin.
Williams’ completion percentage (16 of 19 for 84.2 percent) was a sea- son-best as he posted his fifth 200-yard game of the campaign. The Tampa na- tive connected on a 44- yarder to Frank Brown during the Wildcats’ opening drive of the third quarter that gave the Ma- roon and Gold a 28-14 lead.
Meanwhile, redshirt sopho- more signal caller Larry Brihm, Jr. registered 130 total yards (87 rushing, 43 passing) and a touchdown via
the ground in the second half to help the Wildcats finish their home slate undefeated in five game and extend their home winning streak to 10 games dating back to 2013.
The Wildcats finished with 600 total yards, seven shy of the season-high against Nor- folk State on Homecoming just two weeks prior at “The Cage”.
B-CU running backs Michael D. Jones (73 yards) and graduate senior Anthony Jordan (53) each rushed for first half touchdowns. Jor- dan’s 3-yard run with 4:39 left in the first half not only gave B-CU a 14-7 lead, but moved the senior into a tie alongside former teammate Isidore Jackson for third in career rushing touchdowns at Bethune-Cookman with 34
under his belt.
Marquis Drayton, an-
other B-CU senior playing in his final home game, regis- tered the Wildcats’ first inter- ception return for touchdown of the season – a 30-yarder that pushed the Wildcats to a 21-7 advantage with 3:19 left showing on the clock before intermission.
BYE WEEK FOR WILD- CATS: Having played 10 consecutive weeks to begin the 2015 season, Bethune-Cookman will utilize a much-needed bye week next week, before taking on in-state rival Florida A&M on Novem- ber 21, in the annual Florida Blue Florida Clas- sic at Orlando’s newly renovated Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.
Former Middleton High School track and field phe- nom, Franck Charles, re- cently participated in the largest cross country track meet in the history of Virginia Union University.
Charles, along with his coach, Wilbert Johnson, were both honored with Charles being named the CIAA Men’s Runner of the week, and Coach Johnson named the CIAA Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Week.
Charles won top individual honors in the Panther Classic, a meet which featured two Di- vision I teams (Hampton and Howard) and 73 individual competitors. Coach John- son guided the team to a first place finish in the Panther
classic.
Charles finished first with a
time of 26:13 over the eight kilometer course, and his teammate, Luis Nieves, a sophomore from Miami, was second with a time of 27:27.
VUU’s Arthur Casey, a sophomore from Tampa, fin- ished third with a time of 27:31.
On Friday, September 25th in Petersburg, Virginia, Charles won top honors while his team captured four out of the top five spots to win the Virginia State University Trojan Invitational.
Charles, a senior at VUU, is majoring in Mass Communi- cations. While at Middleton, he was coached by Joe Dixon, and Daniel Dean.
HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 7) – The FAMU Football team fell on the road for the fourth time this season, dropping a 33-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Confer- ence decision to the Hampton Pirates at Armstrong Stadium on a rainy Saturday afternoon. FAMU (1-8, 1-5 in MEAC) suf- fered their second shutout of the season, making this the first time since 1980, that the Rattlers had been blanked twice in the season campaign. The Rattler Offense finished with 168 total yards, while al- lowing Hampton (5-5, 4-3) to roll up 421 total yards on the day.
FAMU used two quarter- backs, starting junior Carson Royal, who directed eight first half drives that netted 14 total yards, before inserting junior Kenny Coleman, who led FAMU to 154 total yards in the second half.
Coleman passed for 88 yards on 8-of-16 passing, rushing for 16 yards on four carries, while Royal had 18 passing yards on 4-of-8 aerial attempts.
Freshman Devin Bowers led FAMU’s ground attack with 78 yards on 20 carries,
FAMU was no match for Hampton.
Hampton Blanks Rattlers On The Road, 33-0
while Montavious Williams led the Rattler re- ceiving group with five catches for 72 yards, although he did have a 69-yard TD play wiped out due to a holding call in the third period.
Linebacker Akil Blount led the FAMU defense with 11 tackles and a tackle for loss, while defensive back Jules Dornevil was one of a trio of Rattlers with six tackles on the day.
Hampton took a 3-0 lead on Adam Brown’s 39-yard field goal with 1:30 left in the opening quarter, then ex- tended their lead to 17-0, with on two scoring tosses from backup quarterback Jerrell
Antoine.
Brown added a 36-yard
fielder in the third period, be- fore the Pirates added two fourth quarter touchdowns to complete the scoring.
HU’s Dwayne Garrett led all rushers with 147 yards on 20 carries, with one score, while Jerrell Antoine fin- ished with 128 yards through the air on 5-of-16 pass at- tempts, with two TDs.
What’s Next: The Rat- tlers continue their No- vember road swing next Saturday, Nov. 14, with a 1:00 p.m. MEAC bout with Morgan State on Earl Banks Field in Hughes Stadium in Batlimore, MD.
