DOROTHY (DOT) HOLTON
According to the Tampa Police Department and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, gang activity definitely exists in the county, but not in the city.
Police spokesperson, Janelle McGregor said there really aren’t any gangs in the city.
Although the Hot Boys Gang and the 700 Boyz were allegedly responsible for a shooting in Sulphur Springs on May 2nd, police said they really aren’t gangs.
“It’s really just a group of guys who hang out to- gether and give themselves names based on where they live or a gang they’ve heard of. The violence they generate is based on personal disputes that’s been going on for years.
“These guys just identify with their neighbor- hoods, and by state statute they aren’t considered gangs. All of the shootings that have occurred in the city were the acts of individuals, not gangs, al- though they may say they are part of a gang. They really lack the unity and organizational structure to be called a gang.”
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Debbie Carter said they have identified 80 different gangs in Hillsborough County.

Court records show Butler, 23, was arraigned Wednesday on two misdemeanor battery counts. He was released on $10,000 bond.
According to police, Butler got out of a car after seeing the men kissing on a street on April 5th. Police said Butler shouted derogatory words about their sexual orientation and punched the men.
Butler, a junior reserve run- ning back, has been suspended indefinitely from team activities, according to Athletic Director Mike Hamrick.
Last season, Butler was Marshall’s second-leading
ally gang members, but spend time with known gang members. They aren’t predominant in one particular area; they’re spread out all over the county.”
