Tampa Man Ordered To Pay $227,376 In ‘Force Posting’ Scam
A U. S. District Judge has ordered a Tampa man to serve approximately 13 months in prison and to repay nearly one quarter of a million in restitution. A c - cording to court documents, U. S. District Judge Mary S. Scriven ordered 19-year- old Kareem Patrick Campbell through a money judgment, to pay $227,375.85, which is consid- ered the proceeds of the wire fraud conspiracy.
Campbell was also or- dered to pay restitution to his victims. Campbell was ar- rested on August 15, 2015. He was sentenced to approxi- mately 13 months in prison, the amount of time he has been in jail since his arrest.
He pleaded guilty to con- spiracy to commit wire fraud on May 4, 2016.
Court documents stated that between April 2015 and August 2015, Campbell and his co-defendants partici- pated in a scam known as “force posting.”
Campbell and the others targeted jewelry stores, car accessory retailers and ho-

tels. As part of the scheme, Campbell would visit the business and present a can- celed debit card that did not have sufficient funds to pay for his purchases.
When the card was de- clined, Campbell would then telephone one of his co- conspirators, who would pre- tend to be a service employee of a bank. The person on the telephone would then pro- vide the merchant with a fake authorization code, along with instructions on how to key the code into the mer- chant’s point of sale machine.
The merchant followed the instructions and would

override his credit card pro- cessing machine’s denial of the debit card. As a result of the scam, the conspirators were able to successfully pur- chase jewelry and other items worth at least $227,375.85.
One of Campbell’s co- conspirators has been identi- fied as Rajiv Edwards. On May 11, 2016, a federal grand jury in the Middle District of Florida returned an 11-count indictment charged Ed- wards with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. However, Edwards has not been taken into cus- tody and remains at large, of- ficials said.
