Polk County
Celebrating Polk County’s Black History
OFFICER JOEL WILBURN
OFFICER JAMES TUGERSON
The first African American Winter Haven Police officer was Joel Wilburn. Wilburn was married to the late Mrs. Gertie Cunningham- Wilburn, who was an Educa- tor. The Wilburns have two daughters, Elizabeth Wilburn Ackerman (At- lanta, GA) and Patricia Wilburn-Hunter (Winter Haven).
Wilburn endured the era of segregation facing injus- tices. Early in his career, Of- ficer Wilburn was not allowed to arrest white people who broke the law. Still he did not quit. He persevered through the obstacles paving the way for today’s African American officers.
The second African Ameri- can Winter Haven Police offi- cer was James ‘Schoolboy’ Tugerson. The Tugerson Baseball Field that is located west of The Northeast Recre- ation Center is named after him. Both Wilburn and Tugerson are deceased.
Faith Leaders Breakfast Held
The Teen Pregnancy Pre- vention Alliance (TPPA), in conjunction with Healthy Start Coalition of Hardee, High- lands and Polk Counties, Inc. (TPPA) recently hosted its an- nual Faith Leaders Breakfast. The purpose of the event is to educate the public about the importance of communicating with our youth on making re- sponsible decisions about sex and teen pregnancy.
It also focuses on how teen pregnancy affects the morals and values of our teens, both male and female. Numerous church leaders and commu- nity partners gathered at the Florida Southern College in Lakeland to enjoy a delicious breakfast, network and learn about TPPA. A warm welcome was extended to all by Mistress of Ceremony Angela Forte, TPPA President, who also ren- dered the opening prayer.
The guests were at awe as they enjoyed the musical per- formance by Anointed Gener- ation of Southeastern University. Marquinia Butts-Fisher, TPPA Coordi- nator, gave an overview pres- entation about TPPA. The guests were educated about TPPA’s Young Leaders pro- gram by Mariah Andresen Otten, Youth Program Spe- cialist.
Elder Gerald Smith and Elder LaTonya Smith of Bridge of Hope Ministries, served as the keynote speak- ers. Yours Truly (Cynthia E. Zorn-Shaw) rendered the ‘commitment to make a change’, encouraging guests to support TPPA’s efforts to lower the rate of teen pregnan- cies in Hardee, Highlands and Polk Counties.
Closing remarks and words of appreciation were extended by Charlene Edwards, Ex- ecutive Director of Healthy Start Coalition of Hardee, Highlands and Polk Counties, Inc. and Angela Forte. For more information about how you can contribute to the ef- forts of TPPA, call (863) 534- 9224.
