Honors Two 50-Year Members
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,

On Sunday, June 28th, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Theta Omega Chapter, will celebrate its Golden and Quarter Century Celebration.
The event will take place at the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore, 2225 N. Lois Av- enue, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The theme for the event is “Alpha Kappa Alpha Women Who Rock, Celebrating Di- mensions of Service in Pure Gold and Sterling Silver.”
During the ceremony, two Tampa women will be hon- ored as women who have been members for 50 years. An additional 13 women will be honored for their 25-year memberships.
Dr. Sylvia Marion Car- ley said, “It is a great honor to be recognized for 50 years of service in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and es- pecially by my chapter, Gamma Theta Omega. The sorority focuses on the very values that I cherish such as providing guidance to youth, assisting with education and scholarship and providing community service to all mankind.”

County. She continued her ed- ucation at Bethune-Cookman University, where she earned a B. A. degree. She continued her education at Clark Atlanta University, where she was presented her Master’s De- gree. She also obtained her Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Florida, as well as a certificate in Higher Education Management from Harvard University.
During her career, she has served as college professor, Dean, Vice President of Edu- cation and Student Develop- ment and as the President of the Ybor Campus of Hillsbor- ough Community College.
Dr. Carley has served on a number of boards, organiza- tions, and committees. Dr. Carley is member of the Na- tional Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., and the Hillsbor- ough County Chapter of the Bethune-Cookman University
MRS. JEWEL BYRD WARREN
Alumni Association. She is also a life member of the Na- tional Council of Negro Women and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Dr. Carley is married to Henry Carley and they are the parents of 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Jewel Byrd War- ren said, “To be honored is wonderful. However, to serve with love is divine.”
Mrs. Warren is a retired educator and administrator, who has served as a Project Director, Master Trainer, Ex- ecutive Director, Principal, Site Coordinator, Teacher,
Parent-Teacher Coordinator, Home Economists, and Real- tor. She has also owned and operated a successful child care facility.
After graduating from Middleton High School, Mrs. Warren continued her edu- cation at Tuskegee University, where she earned a B. S. De- gree in Vocational Home Eco- nomics. She also earned her M. S. Degree in Educational Leadership from Nova South- Eastern University.
Mrs. Warren is often called upon to address audi- ences on behalf of religious groups, social service agen- cies, businesses, clubs, and organizations. She is also the founder and teacher of Every- day Faith Bible Study.
Mrs. Warren is the re- cipient of numerous religious, business, and community awards. Mrs. Warren is a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is also a member of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, the Council of Catholic Women, The Tampa Chapter of The Links, Inc., the National Asso- ciation for Female Executives,
and Tuskegee Alumni.
Mrs. Warren is married
to Carl Marion Warren and the mother of two sons and one daughter. The couple has 3 grandchildren.
The organization will also pay tribute to several Silver Stars, women who have held membership in the organiza- tion for 25 years.
Those honorees are;
Davina Carrington, Luella Carrington, Donna Cason, Jestina Cox, Fele- cia Gilmore Long, Ma- jorie Mobley, Gwendolyn Myers, Ida Nix, Ann Porter, Rhonda Rhodes, Glenda Washington, Sonja Wise, and Dierdre White.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Soror- ity, Inc., was founded on the campus of Howard University in 1908. It was the vision of 9 young women enrolled at the institution of higher learning.
Since its inception, nearly 100 years ago, the organiza- tion has embraced nearly 300,000 women who are bound by sisterhood and em- powered by a commitment to service.
