Mini-Summer Camps Designed To Help Parents And Children
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Countless shootings since the beginning of the year have taken place in Hillsborough County. Many of those shoot- ings resulted in the deaths of young Tampa men.
The escalation in gun vio- lence has prompted city offi- cials as well as community leaders to seek methods to ad- dress the violence and to elimi- nate it.
Mayor Bob Buckhorn
has launched a program that extends the hours of city parks and recreation centers. He will
also conduct a gun buy-back this weekend.
Additionally, two other or- ganizations have joined forces to offer free mini-camps for youngsters between the ages of 6 and 12. The mini-camps are being offered as a partnership between Pastors On Patrol and the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches, Inc. The two organi- zations are using the theme, “Harmony In The Streets.”
Pastor Moses Brown,
founder of Feed Our Children Ministries, Inc., said “There are other camps, but the commu- nity wanted the faith-based or- ganizations to offer something

as well.
“These camps are located in
three areas and we provide everything except transporta- tion. Parents can come to the location the child will attend and register.
“We know parents want a safe haven for their kids and we are offering a better option than being idle and venturing into trouble.”
The camps will take place from Monday, June 29th through Thursday, July 2nd, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The locations are: Bel- mont Heights Estates, 1607 E. 29th Avenue (813) 248- 5003; Beulah Baptist Insti- tutional Church, 1006
Cypress Street, (813) 251- 3382; and College Hill Church Of God In Christ, 6414 N. 30th Street, (813) 239-3161.
The camps will include games, law enforcement demonstrations, water activi- ties, team sports, archery, arts & crafts, among other activities.
Pastor Brown said these are the first camps, but others will be held during the summer months.

‘Women Of Greatness’ To Host Conference In Tampa
On Saturday, June 27th, members of the community will gather for the “Women Of Greatness” (WOG) will host their “Classy And Sassy Women’s Night Out” Con- ference. The event will take
place at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd., from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.
The conference, aimed at helping women to uncover their true potential, will gather top
visionaries and business lead- ers for an evening of informa- tive sessions, networking, entertainment, food and shop- ping.
Ms. Martha Cooper- Hudson, a renowned author, motivational speaker and talk show host, founded WOG eight years ago. Drawing on her ex- perience in network marketing, her vision was to provide a pos- itive, non-competitive atmos- phere where women were
inspired and equipped with the recipes for success in life and business. Today, that vision has blossomed into one of the pre- mier entrepreneurship events for women.
Tampa-based businesses will have the opportunity to ex- pose female attendees to their products and services - show- casing a variety of health and wellness products ranging from candles, purses and jewelry to books and bath and body prod-

ucts.
“For local businesses, our
mission at every event is to make sure that they generate a consumer base that will con- tinue to allow their businesses to thrive and grow at an expo- nential level. They will be intro- duced to individuals who have never had their products. Our mission is to grow small busi- nesses by opening them up to the women,” Ms. Cooper- Hudson said.
Among the participants in the WOG event will be serial entrepreneur, Bass Grant, Vice President of Diamantaire Elite Group, Inc. and celebrity stylist, Micheline Barber.
Grant, who will keynote the Entrepreneurship Lunch- eon, said he plans to emphasize to women that they are far more influential than they real- ize.
Ms. Cooper-Hudson
echoes those sentiments, which is why she has traveled around the nation coaching people on how to make their dreams a re- ality. For women in Tampa, she wants to bring the tools to their doorstep and leave a lasting im- pression.
“When women leave an event that is done by Women of Greatness, not only do they leave with the confidence in knowing all of their dreams are possible, but that we as women must continue to uplift each other because we go through the same issues and problems,” Ms. Cooper-Hudson said.
“I want women to be equipped, inspired, motivated and empowered to live a life of great health and wealth while discovering and walking in their purpose.”
