Students Participate In Winning Reading Boost Program

On Monday, a group of el- ementary students began at- tending a summer reading program and sports camp. The event is being held at the Po- lice Athletic League.
The event is being spon- sored by AT&T Pioneers and the Yob Family Foundation. As a result of the program, twenty-five students will learn
how to read and advancing their reading skills during the nine-week summer program.
Ms. Janelle McGregor,
PAL Board Member said, “In past years, PAL has run sports camps for students in the sum- mer. This summer, we wanted to also focus on academics, to help build student athletes.”
Andrew Hall, President
of AT&T Pioneers Tampa Bay said, “This camp offers a won- derful opportunity for the Pio- neers to support an engaging and effective strategy to de- velop literacy for students in Tampa. The Tampa Bay Pio- neers are happy to support this program and these stu- dents.”
The Police Athletic League received funding from the Yob
Family Foundation and AT&T Pioneers, a volunteer network of current and former AT&T employees, for the Winning Reading Boost Program.
A partnership between the University Of Florida College Of Education’s Lastinger Cen- ter for Learning and Sue Dickson, an award-winning author and publisher, devel- oped the Winning Reading
Boost program.
Teachers will lead Winning
Reading Boost lessons in the morning, then the campers will enjoy sports and other ac- tivities the rest of the camp day, McGregor said.
Volunteers and Tampa Po- lice officers also will be assist- ing at the camp, helping the students with their reading lessons.
