2015 Grant Proposals
The Autism Services Grants Council is accepting proposals for grant funding. Florida’s non-profit organiza- tions providing services and programs for individuals with autism and related disabili- ties are encouraged to submit a proposal.

Last year, the Autism Serv- ices Grants Council awarded more than $50,000 to 11 Florida-based nonprofits that applied for funding.
Proposals must be submit- ted by Monday, August 31st, via e-mail attachment sent to info@autismlicenseplate.co m.
For questions or for more information contact the Autism Services Grants Council (c/o ARC Broward) at 954-746-9400 or send an e mail to inquire. To download the grant application, visit www.autismlicenseplate.com.

KEVIN BECKNER County Commissioner
Justice Department Seeks Additional Community Input
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
In April 2015, a local news- paper printed a series of arti- cles about bicycle citations. Entitled “How Riding Your Bike Can Land You in Trouble With The Cops --- If You’re Black,” the se- ries focused on the practices of the Tampa Police Depart- ment and bicycle ticketing.
The articles produced evi- dence that while African Americans make up less than 25% of the population, they were the recipients of the lion’s share of tickets.
After the articles appeared in print, Mayor Bob Buck- horn and then Police Chief Jane Castor invited the U. S. Department of Justice to launch an investigation.
Meetings have taken place in Tampa where citizens could
voice their concerns about the bicycle citations. Now, the De- partment of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), in conjunc- tion with the Virginia Center for Policing Innovation (VCPI) have joined forces. The two agencies are currently conducting a review of the Tampa Police Department’s ticketing operations, bicycle citation program, and interac- tion with the community.
As part of this review, the Virginia Center for Policing Innovation is requesting feed- back from the Tampa commu- nity. They are asking anyone wishing to make a comment to provide anonymous feedback on the Tampa Police Depart- ment’s traffic and bicycle en- forcement practices. To participate in the feedback process, visit the website at www.vcpion-line.org.
