Poison Control Centers Launch New Website
Fatal poisonings are a leading cause of accidental deaths in Florida. Most people are unaware of daily poisoning risks and these risks are not confined to small children anymore. Florida’s poison control centers have launched Phase 1 of their redesigned network website as an added service to reach all Floridians with reliable, accurate information on a wide array of potentially toxic exposures in Florida.
The website includes a unique interactive poisoning data dashboard that allows the public to view and analyze poisoning exposure data for 2014 within the State of Florida using a va- riety of data elements.
These new data capabilities facilitate searches for poisoning trends using several variables such as victim’s age, treatment locations (home or hospital) and type of poisoning or exposure to a poisonous substances.
The website also includes significant educational content that is easy to read, user-friendly, and free to download. The site offers information on poison prevention, common causes of poisonings in all age groups, and benefits to calling the poi- son center.
Although most of the information in Phase 1 is for the gen- eral public, Phase 2 will include an extensive array of informa- tion for health care professionals once launched.
Anyone wishing to reach the Poison Control Center can call (800) 222-1222, 24 hours a day. The new website can be ac- cessed at www.floridapoisoncontrol.org,
