REMEMBERING MAMA
Ringing in a New School Year
LEILA SMITH WILLIAMS
20th year in the New Jerusalem
Each year, excitement enters the hearts of children who have been on summer vacation from intensive studies, and the an- nouncing of times students and staff will start a new school year. Mama loved for us to attend school, and eager for our return to the ‘halls of learning,’ e.g., to rekindle friendships, attend classes at a different grade level, and meet newly assigned teachers. In preparing for the new school year, our parents and others looked at their ‘dollars and cents’ to consider ways to buy clothes, shoes, school supplies, and other resources their children needed for the new school year.
Our parents would do their best to have us ready for the school’s opening day! During the summer months, Daddy worked overtime at the phosphate plant to earn extra money to help with purchasing school items. Mama would starch and iron the best of our ‘old school’ clothes to integrate with the newly purchased clothes to complete the back-to-school wardrobe. Moreover, Daddy bought our brother at least three pairs of Sear’s tough skin jeans, matching shirts, a four-pack of black socks with multi-col- ored bands, and two sets of Fruit of the Loom activewears. Like- wise, Mama gave the girls a National Bellas Hess Company’s catalog to select at least two dresses for ordering; the choice of Dan River bolts of apparel fabric bought for Ms. Shipp, neigh- borhood dressmaker, to make each a stylish new dress. Ringing in the new school year!
Looking back, Mama’s favorite store to buy school shoes was Cannon Shoes on E. Broadway St., Ybor City. Happily, we all left the store with our favorite style of shoes. At home, each took their shoes to Mr. Davis’s Shoe Repair on 29th Street to affix heel taps! To wear to P. E. classes, Daddy bought each one a white pair of the famous “Hot Boxes” from his right price store.’ Final prepa- ration included a prized trip to Ms. Castello and Ms. Emma Lee’s for a ‘pressure and curly hairdo;’ a ‘high-right and low-left’ cut at Stone’s Barbershop with the fellas. When Monday came, Daddy and Mama gave us a “good talking to” about gaining ‘new learnings,’ and ‘minding’ the teachers! Enthusiastically, both wished us a good day and school year! Ringing in the new school year!
The Bible describes in Proverbs 31, a virtuous woman as the one who loved her husband and children, sacrificed herself, and feared the Lord. A woman who opened her mouth with wisdom and a tongue of kindness. She led her home with integrity, disci- pline, and more. Reverently, she is a woman whose children arise, and call her blessed; and her husband also praised her.
Thanks to God, our Mama was a virtuous woman of worthy works and praise! A woman who fought a good fight, kept the faith, and finished her (earthly) course. Well Done!
Goodnight Mama, we will see you in the morning! Your loving children, Juanita M. Brown, Rev. Leatricia A. Williams, Earliest (Bro) Williams, Valretha (Val) Williams, Maggie Hunter, Norma J. Williams, Michele W. Silas; and the grandchildren.
