Bishop Eddie Newkirk Passes After Brief Illness
Bishop Eddie Newkirk, longtime pastor of St. John Cathedral, passed away Satur- day, February 14, 2015, after a brief illness.
Bishop Newkirk had been in declining health since suf- fering a mild stroke in No- vember, daughter Kay Morgan said.
Bishop Newkirk came to Tampa from across the Bay, St. Petersburg, in 1969 to be- come the pastor of St. John Baptist Church. He was ac- companied by his wife, Au- drey Newkirk and five young children – Karl, Mau- rice, Ernest, Dwight and Luetwanda (Kay).
A young man in his forties when he came to Tampa, Bishop Newkirk has con- tinued his pastorship at St. John without interruption.
BISHOP EDDIE NEWKIRK
Before coming to Tampa, he and his wife founded E & A Concrete Construction Com- pany in 1959 in St. Petersburg,
which became a multi-million dollar business, and is still op- erable.
St. John was among the first congregations in the Tampa community to intro- duce and embrace many new ministries. He taught and trained those who worked in these ministries. Although the title “Missionary” was dropped from the church’s name under his direction, the church actually does more missionary work through the numerous ministries.
Following his elevation to Bishop and earning the Doc- tor of Divinity degree in reli- gion, the church added “Cathedral” to its name.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete as we go to press. Wilson Funeral Home is han- dling arrangements.
