April 2, 2015 marks the re- turn of the historic Miss Howard W. Blake High School Pageant.
The contest of beauty, brains and talent became a campus staple dating back to 1956, one year after the school originally opened. “It all started at the Don Thomp- son School and continued over to Blake High School [nearly 60 years ago],” states Francis Jennings, Vice President of the Blake High Booster Club.
The first Miss Blake was Majorie Mays, of the class of 1957. She is a retired edu- cator and still lives in the Tampa Bay area. It is ex- pected she and other former women who were once crowned “Miss Blake” will take part in this year’s pag- eant scheduled for Thursday, April2at7P.M.intheDon Thompson Theatre at Howard W. Blake High School, 1791 North Boule- vard, Tampa 33607.
The 2015 pageant will highlight six 11th grade ladies who are current students at Blake, all vying to be a part of the school’s rich history. The contestants all meet the min- imal requirements of at least a 2.8 G.P.A., have had no sus-

pensions or referrals during their high school career and have agreed to conduct them- selves with excellence during and after the contest.
Each contestant will com- pete in the following cate- gories: Opening Number, Talent, Evening Gown and Question and Answer. Those categories will be rated by a panel of judges that include Tampa City Council mem- bers, a former Hillsborough County School District leader, Tampa business leaders, and a former Miss Blake High. The contestants will also be judged on their photogenic, by Blake’s student body.
Years ago, the Miss Blake contest was based on popu- larity where the student body voted for the winner. In addi- tion, contestants had to write an essay on why they should hold the title. This year’s win- ner will be crowned and adorned with the tiara and robe worn by the original Miss Blake of 1957. She will then spend her senior year, 2015-2016, representing Howard W. Blake on campus and in the community.
Tickets for the event are on sale now at a price of $10. The event is presented by “The Jacket,” Blake’s newspa- per. All proceeds will benefit production and publication of “The Jacket.”
