MR. DERREK CARNELL WELLS
Survivors and friends will celebrate the life and Homego- ing of Mr. Derrek Carnell Wells, who passed away on December 31, 2018. The service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 2 p. m., at Harmon Funeral Home, 5002 N. 40th Street, Tampa, with Pastor Otis Cooper of New Ris- ing Star Ministries, officiating. Interment will Follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
Visitation for Mr. Derrek Carnell Wells will be held this Friday evening from 5 p. m. until 8 p. m. at Harmon Funeral Home.
Friends are asked to assem- ble at the Chapel at 1:45 p. m.

Era Passes

A popular radio disc jockey, whose career in radio spanned from the late 1950s to the ‘70s has passed away.
Thomas (Tom) Han- kerson, Jr. passed away Sunday, January 20, 2019, after a lengthy illness, his wife of 56 years, Eddye Hankerson said. He was 84 years old.
A Lakeland native, Han- kerson grew up in Tampa and graduated from Don Thompson Vocational High (now, Howard W. Blake). He did further study in Criminal Justice is Hillsborough Com- munity College.
After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and became a paratrooper and received technical training as a pro- jectionist.
After his military stint, Hankerson returned to Tampa. His gift for gab and love for people propelled his career in radio. In 1957, he began his career with WTMP Radio, engineering the late show as disc jockey. He eventually became program director, and even was pro- gram director at WCIN in Cincinnati, OH.
Hankerson was Road Promotion Manager for famed performer, James Brown.
In 1968, he was promoted to General Manager of Radio Station WJBE in Knoxville, TN, a station owned by James Brown.
In 1970, he returned to Tampa as Program Manager at WTMP Radio. He was also announcer at WWBA AM/FM and WARM 94.9 FN in St. Petersburg, for 8 years, and Tampa’s WDAE for 2

During his long radio ca-
reer, Hankerson traveled from city to city hosting record hops at schools, recreation centers, play- grounds and churches, en- couraging young people to stay in school, get an educa- tion and give back to their community.
Hankerson held law en- forcement positions with the St. Petersburg Police Depart- ment. He worked in Tampa City Government as a Pro- gram Analyst. He retired from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in 2003, where he served as a Bailiff for 18 years in the Hillsborough County Court System.
After retirement, he en- joyed traveling in his motor home with is wife, Eddye, daughter, Tricia and their dog, Misty, along with other family members and friends. He also enjoyed cruising and vacationing in the Caribbean at least twice a year.
A Memorial to celebrate his life will be announced later.
