The Los Angeles Lakers earned a series win on Satur- day night, and Charles Barkley earned himself some cash.
The Lakers beat the Port- land Trail Blazers 131-122 in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series in Orlando, Fla. LeBron James and An- thony Davis were monsters in the win.
James had 36 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, ex- tending his NBA record with his 13th 30-point playoff triple- double, according to TNT. Davis scored 43 points on 14- of-18 shooting and made four of six 3-pointers.
Barkley originally pre- dicted on TNT that the Blazers would sweep the Lakers after winning Game 1 of the series. So after the Lakers won Game 2, Shaquille O’Neal snapped Barkley’s sweep broom.
LeBron James had 36 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, extending his NBA record with his 13th 30-point playoff triple-double.
Shaq repeated the stunt again on Saturday night and then challenged Barkley to break a broom for $100,000. He came through.
That was easy money for Barkley, and a smooth path to series victory for the Lakers after dropping the first game of the series.

     John Thompson, Coach
 Who Built Georgetown
Basketball Into National
Power, Dies At 78
 JOHN THOMPSON, JR.
Legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson, Jr., known simply as "Big John" throughout college basketball, has died at age 78.
Thompson, who led Georgetown to the 1984 na- tional championship, built the program into a juggernaut, taking the Hoyas to three Final Fours in the 1980s while also winning seven Big East titles and leading the 1988 United States national team to a bronze medal in the Olympics.
"We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of our father, John Thomp-
son, Jr.," the Thompson family said in a statement re- leased by Georgetown. "Our father was an inspiration to many and devoted his life to developing young people not simply on, but most impor- tantly, off the basketball court. He is revered as a his- toric shepherd of the sport, dedicated to the welfare of his community above all else.”
Thompson's coaching legacy includes the recruit- ment and development of four players in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo and Allen Iverson.
"This is a person that, when I came to college -- I was 18 -- helped me to grow," Ewing, the current George- town coach, said during Big East media day last October. "Even though my mom and dad were always there, he was always a person I could pick up the phone and call if I had a problem or if I had a ques- tion."
