School District Hosts Annual Black History Celebration Held At State Fair

For the fourth consecu- tive year, the Hillsborough County School District will be a participant in the 2019 Florida State Fair. The dis- trict will host two areas in the Florida Center.
One display includes ex- hibits representing 14 schools. The exhibits are in keeping with the theme, “Preparing Students for Life.” The second display pays tribute to Black History Month.
The Black History exhibit consists of 16 exhibits cre- ated by schools and commu- nity members. Its theme is, “Celebrate African American Pioneers in the Arts and STEM.”

ruary 7th and close on Mon- day, February 18th.
On Friday, designated as Student Day, the Black His- tory Celebration will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Among those slated to attend are Tony and Lau- ren Dungy, who will sign autographs. The McDonald’s Character Award Scholar- ship presentation and recog- nition of this year’s LEAD
participants will also take place. This event will take place from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., on the Tampa Bay Times stage, which is adja- cent to the Florida Center. The day will include live per- formances including DJ J. T.
The events were organ- ized by Dr. Minerva Span- ner Morrow, Chief Diversity Officer for the Hillsborough County School District, Donald Dow- dridge, motivational speaker, and Ms. Ersula Odom, a local author.
Walter “Wally B” Jen- nings will serve as the Mas- ter of Ceremonies. Ms. Tamara Shamburger, Chairperson of the Hillsbor- ough County School District and Harrison Peters, Chief of Schools will address those in attendance.
Some of the participants include: Lockhart Elemen- tary Magnet Drumline, King High School Jazz Band, Arm- wood High School Drumline, Soul 2 Soul Singers, Chloe Jones, “Miss June- teenth,” St. John’s Mission- ary Baptist Church Choir, and others.

Event
through 12 will receive free tickets for admission. How- ever, students must have a valid school-issued photo- graph or equivalent. Any stu- dents entering the fairgrounds after 6 p.m., must be accompanied by an adult, 21 years of age or older. The chaperone will re- ceive free admission.
Panel Discussion On Racism And Sports
A panel discussion on racism and sports in honor of Black His- tory Month will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019, 1-3 p. m. The event will be held at the American Legion USS Tampa, 3810 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa 33609.
Panelists for the free event will feature: Tiffany Greene, ESPN commentator and journalist; Dr. Janelle Wells, Assis- tant Professor, Vinik Sports and Entertainment Management MBA Program; Javon Lue, Assistant Coach, Women’s Basket- ball, Hillsborough Community College; and others.
The discussion is hosted by community radio, 88.5 FM, WMNF’s Sunday Forum.
