AILANI FORDE
... Young Entrepreneur wins coveted award
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Most 8-year-olds spent their winter break focusing on the holidays. But one Tampa pre-teen focused her atten- tions on her first business.
Ailani Forde’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Colin (Jose- lynne) Forde had no idea they were about to venture into the fashion industry. She took an existing product and added her own personal touch.
Having always had the de- sire to design or create things, Ailani was visiting her grandparents during winter break. After she became bored, she asked her mom to take her to the arts and crafts store to purchase supplies and her mom agreed.
The enterprising young lady took the supplies and began creating what she refers to as “Fancy Flip Flops.” After her mom saw the creation, she posted a photo- graph of them on Facebook. Mrs. Forde said she re- ceived three orders immedi- ately.
That was the beginning of “Fancy Flops By Ailani.” So far, she has designed more

than 75 pairs of flip flops for women and children. And, the family expects to be busy dur- ing the summer months.
In addition to having a product that the public is in- terested in, Ailani has also caught the attention of a na- tional organization.
Last weekend, she became the recipient of the first 2015 NAACP “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award! It was presented to her by the Volusia County Chap- ter of the NAACP during their Annual Freedom Fund Ban- quet.
In addition to designing, Ailani enjoys ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics, karate, and play- ing the violin. She also enjoys spending time with her par- ents, and little brother, Colin, II.
Although she is just finish- ing second grade, she already knows that she wants to be- come the first female African American U. S. Supreme Court judge.
A portion of the proceeds that Ailani earns will benefit a local organization that helps homeless children. Her color- ful designs can be seen on her website at http://www.fan- cyflopsbyailani.com.
