Akon Launches Solar Academy That Will Supply Electricity To Millions In Africa
Music producer and singer Akon.
When he’s not singing or producing music, Akon is busy providing sustainable liv- ing options to people in African countries. The Sene- galese-American singer’s ini- tiative, appropriately called
Akon Lighting Africa, aims to supply electricity to 600 mil- lion people in Africa who lack it with the launch of the Solar Academy. Located in Bamako, Mali, the Solar Academy will help African engineers and en- trepreneurs develop skills that will enable them to produce solar power. Experts will be on hand to help the participants with training and equipment,.
According to Akon Lighting Africa, the goal of the academy is to teach people how to maintain solar-powered elec- tricity systems and microgrids. Both systems have been grow- ing quickly in rural parts of Africa. In a continent that has 320 days of sun a year, roping in its natural resources will be valuable to the solar-energy ef- forts.
Alleged Terrorist Shot And Killed In Boston
BOSTON, MA --- There are still many questions sur- rounding the fatal shooting of a Boston man by terrorism in- vestigators in Roslindale Tuesday. Police say Usaama Rahim, a 26-year-old Roslin- dale resident, was shot and killed by investigators, who approached him for question- ing, after he allegedly lunged at them with a military-style knife. Rahim’s shooting is being investigated by the Suf- folk County district attorney’s office and the FBI.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force had Rahim under 24- hour surveillance, according to Vincent Lisi, the FBI’s special agent in charge of Boston. A criminal complaint related to the case said Rahim had a phone conversation Tuesday morning about at- tacking police officers.
Usaama Rahim was fatally shot by law enforcement in Boston.
Commissioner William Evans said law enforcement officers approached Rahim to question him about terrorism- related activities.
On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, the chair-
man of the House Homeland Security Committee, said Rahim had been “communi- cating with and spreading ISIS propaganda online.”
David Wright, the man who was arrested in Everett Tuesday night in connection with the terror probe, is Rahim’s nephew. Wright appeared in federal court in Boston Wednesday in connec- tion with the investigation. He was ordered held on a charge of conspiracy with intent to obstruct a federal investiga- tion. The criminal complaint against 24-year-old Wright alleges that he knew of a plot by Rahim to attack the “boys in blue” (what the FBI says was a reference to police offi- cers in Massachusetts) and conspired with Rahim to de- stroy or cover up evidence in the plot.
