Tampa Native Promoted To Postmaster
LACONNIA BUTLER WATKINS
LaConnia Butler Watkins began her postal career in Miami at the Norland Branch as a Letter Carrier in 1986, transferring later to the Boca Raton Post Office in 1987. She began her career in man- agement at the Deerfield Beach Post Office in April 1992, where she steadily advanced to positions with increased responsibility includ- ing Manager, Customer Services in West Boca Carrier Annex and Boca Raton Main Office.
She has served in several higher level details including Officer- In-Charge Pahokee, Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Port St. Lucie and Delray Beach. Formerly, she was the Postmaster of Jupiter, FL, where her expertise expanded in City Delivery, Safety, Human Re- lations, and Retail Operations.
LaConnia was featured in the top story in the National Postal Link for being the only office in the South Florida District, out of 49 offices in the feature of the Postal Service’s new competitive P.O. Box service “Baker’s Dozen.”
Among Watkins’ accolades, she was presented a Golden Eagle Award for extraordinary efforts, commitment and heroism. Watkins was also presented an award by Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) for “Special Government Employee” in Rhode Island after achieving Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) status at the Boca Raton Main Office. Her leadership in safety resulted in Watkins conducting numerous audits with OSHA.
As a natural leader, she served in the role as a squad leader in basic training in the United States Army at the age of 17 when en- listing in 1981. She has completed courses at the Chicago College in EMS during her service years as a Medical Specialist with time served in Germany, Texas and Missouri.
LaConnia has been married to her husband, Terence for 32 years and has three children (Terence, Jr., Latecia and Alisha), and one grandchild (Jaleah), and a grandson due in April, 2015.
LaConnia is the sister of Barbara B. Dixon, Genia B. Tay- lor, Evelyn B. Hamilton, Maeordrie B. Jones and Soraya B. Alexander.
LaConnia is the daughter of George Butler, Sr. and Annie Mae Butler.
She is the sister of Cora B. Davis, George Butler, Jr., William James Butler, Sr. and Calvin Butler, all deceased.
In addition to becoming the 11th Postmaster of Jupiter, FL, she also made history becoming the First African American woman ap- pointed to the position.
LaConnia was born in Tampa, FL, graduating from Hillsbor- ough High, class of 1981, and relocating to South Florida after her tour in the military.
Congratulations to our sister, LaConnia Butler Watkins, known to some as Connie, in her new appointment as the 16th Post- master of Boynton Beach, FL, where LaConnia Watkins has been named Postmaster, which is the third largest city in Palm Beach County, where she has again made history as the first African Amer- ican woman to hold this position.
Connie is also a member of Mount Olive M. B. Church in Delray Beach, FL, Rev. Dr. L. Johnson, Pastor.
