Candlelight Vigil Set To Remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
BY MONIQUE STAMPS Sentinel Staff Writer
On April 4, 1968, civil rights leader and Nobel Lau- reate Reverend Dr. Mar- tin Luther King, Jr., was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Ten- nessee. The brutal slaying came just one day after giv- ing his "I've Been to the Mountaintop” speech to thousands of supporters. His death still troubles people today, as we mourn one of the greatest leaders in mod- ern history.
This year, on the 54th an- niversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s death, Allen Temple AME Church invites the public to a candlelight vigil in memory of Dr. King and his legacy.
The event will take place on Monday, April 4, 2022, at the Allen Temple AME Church. There will be a re- ception at 6:00 p.m. and the candlelight service and pro- gram will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Reverend Glenn Dames, pastor of Allen Temple AME, says that after OMICORN hit earlier this year, the church
REV. GLENN DAMES ...Pastor of Allen Temple AME Church
decided to prayerfully honor Dr. King on the day of his
passing.
“We have forgotten to re-
vere his death and the affect of his death on the Civil Rights Movement. His death had deep meaning and we cannot forget that,” Rev. Dames said.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister, County Commissioner Gwen Myers, and other prominent citizens will be at the service.
The church will also honor unsung heroes from the community.
Pastor Dames wants the community to remem- ber. “Let us all commit to embracing our role in the King legacy.”
Allen Temple AME Church congregation be- lieves that it is important that the church inspire all
people from around the world, and especially the Tampa Bay area, to embrace their role in the King legacy.
“We should remember Dr. King’s fight for people around the world. He was a staunch advocate for peace and the downtrodden. Dr. King fought for all.”
“We need to empower one another to create a culture of nonviolence, take action in our communities, and work together to build the beloved community that Dr. King envisioned. We believe that this event is a step in that di- rection.”
The event is free and open to the public, but reser- vations are required.
