Watoto Children’s Choir From Africa Perform In Tampa
The Watoto Children’s Choir, a church-based organi- zation from Uganda, was in Tampa on Tuesday, March 7th. They performed at the Morn- ingStar Church on West Linebaugh, where Tony Byrd is the pastor.
Prior to their remarkable performance, the Tampa
Chapter of The Links, Incor- porated, International Trends facet, hosted an evening meal and gave the children gifts.
The children, all of whom are orphaned, travel the world for 5 months as ambassadors for the orphaned children and widows of Africa. The Chil- dren’s Choir is made up of
about 22 members from the Kampala, Uganda Watoto Church.
The Tampa concert was the next to last performance by the children. They had 1 more performance before re- turning to Uganda. The choir won’t return for 2 years. (Photos by BRUNSON)

Kente Awards And Scholarship Luncheon Will Honor Atty. Delano Stewart, Institute On Black Life
ATTY. DELANO STEWART ...Kente Award honoree
On Tuesday, April 11, the USF Foundation will be cele- brating the 2017 Kente Awards and Scholarships Luncheon, sponsored in part by the Florida Lottery!
This year will celebrate FOUR scholarships which as- sist African-American stu- dents. All ticket proceeds will benefit the diversity scholar- ships at USF. The Kente Award is presented by the African- American Advisory Committee to recognize leadership in re- solving educational and social problems as they relate to indi- viduals of African-American heritage.
This year the Kente Award will honor Community Leader Atty. Delano Stewart – an African-American trailblazer and prominent Tampa civil rights attorney, who broke
ground on many fronts during his five decade long career. The event will also pay tribute to the USF Institute on Black Life, which is celebrating its 30-year anniversary in 2017.
In 1965, Atty. Stewart be- came the first African- Ameri- can board member for the Hillsborough County Young Democrats. In 1966, he became the first Black Public Defender in Hillsborough County, fol- lowed by being the first African-American elected to the Board of Directors for the Hillsborough County Bar Asso- ciation, and the first African- American member of the Rough Riders Civic Club.
Atty. Stewart is credited with founding The Delano S. Stewart Diversity Award, Tampa’s predominantly Black George E. Edgecomb Bar Asso- ciation and the Tampa Organi- zation of Black Affairs (TOBA).
