Two Teens Killed After Vehicle Crashes Into Pole
Two teenagers were killed and another injured after the vehicle they were riding in crashed into a utility pole. The accident took place in the 4200 block of 11th Avenue, South, in St. Petersburg.
According to police, Ms. Nikia Killens, 17, was driv- ing a black 2013 Buick Ren- dezvous. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on 11th Avenue South.
The passengers in the vehi- cle were 14-year-old Shaariyah Brown, St. Petersburg, and 18-year-old Brice Lewis, of St. Peters- burg.
Ms. Killens reportedly drove off the roadway and crashed into a power pole. She was transported to Johns Hop- kins All Children’s Hospital with minor injuries. Brown was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where she was pronounced dead. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two suspects in connection with a pair of homicides re- cently in Dover and Thonoto- sassa.
Through investigative means, detectives have identi- fied and arrested Daniel Ne- grete, 27, and Fatima Garcia Avila, 20, who are connected to both homicides.
Detectives learned that Ne- grete and Garcia Avila drove together to the victim’s home in the 3000 block of Al Simmons Road on the night of the first homicide in Dover on July 18, 2022. Negrete and Garcia Avila left the resi- dence in separate vehicles, one of which detectives found nearby after it had been set on fire.
On July 26, 2022, detec- tives responded to the Baker Creek Boat Ramp at 12095 Thonotosassa Road, for a re- port of a person down. They discovered a man deceased, with upper body trauma.
Again, detectives learned that Negrete and Garcia Avila were there at the time of the crime and responsible for the man’s death.
In both cases, the victims were not killed at random. De- tectives have confirmed there are familial ties between the suspects and the victims.

Last week, State Attorney Andrew Warren announced the arrests of two men linked to the murders of two women in the summer of 1983. Robert DuBoise, who was convicted of the murders was exon- erated two years ago.
The State has charged Amos Robinson, 58, and Abron Scott, 57, with both murders. They were indicted by the Grand Jury. Both men are currently in Florida State Prison serving life sentences for unre- lated murders.
According to the
State, the body of Ms. Linda Lansen, 41,
was found at the end of Memorial Highway in
the Town ‘n’ Country
area of Tampa on July 11, 1983, investigators said. She had been raped, shot in the head, and dumped in the bushes.
Ms. Barbara Grams, 19, was found behind a dentist of- fice in the Tampa Heights area on August 19, 1983. She had been raped and beaten.
The State Attorney’s Of- fice’s Conviction Review Unit, which was established by An- drew Warren in 2018, lo- cated DNA evidence in 2020 that confirmed DuBoise did not kill Ms. Grams. During the investigation, the State At- torney’s Office said it looked into other mysterious deaths from the same time in Tampa.
That led to the re-opening of Ms. Lansen’s murder case, which had gone un- solved for nearly 40 years, ac- cording to authorities.
Detectives said they were able to link the two men to
both of the unsolved murders. Both Robinson and Scott are currently in prison and serving life sentences for killing Carlos Orellana, in Oldsmar, in October 1983. Of- ficials said Orellana was kid- napped, beaten, and run over
using his own car.
In the 1990s, Robinson
and another man were also charged with the September 1983 beating death of Her- menia Castro in Tampa, but the case never made it to trial due to a lack of evidence, pros- ecutors confirmed.
Robinson has also killed two fellow inmates during his time in prison. Officials said investigations into other 1983 murders are ongoing.
Attorney Warren said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Tampa Po- lice Department, and Hills- borough County Sheriff’s Office all assisted in the cold case investigation.
have forever changed at least two families.
“Ending someone’s life cannot — and should not — be the answer to any situation. Detectives are still connecting the dots to determine the mo- tive behind the two murders and if there are others in- volved. I pray that these ar- rests, while they won’t bring home their loved ones, will give the families affected some closure.”
Negrete was charged with 2 counts of premeditated first- degree murder with a firearm, 2 counts of first-degree mur- der causing great bodily harm, death; 2 counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree mur- der; 2 counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and arson.
Garcia Avila was charged with 2 counts of premeditated first-degree murder, 2 counts of being a principal party to murder in the first-degree murder, 2 counts of tampering with a witness (during first- degree murder.
