High School Graduates Receive Sloan Scholarship Awards

Recently, the First Baptist Church of Progress Village held a scholarship program for graduating high school seniors. During the program, they also recognized students who were continuing their ed- ucation.
The scholarships were presented during the 19th An- nual C. L. Sloan Scholarship Banquet. The speaker for the event was Curtis Sails, III, a former recipient of the scholarship.
Sails cautioned students about the pitfalls which may lie in their path as they strive to succeed. He also reminded the students of the impor-

tance of keeping a relation- ship with God and with their families.
Sails shared his own per- sonal experiences at Florida State University with the au- dience, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree. He contin- ued his education at Mar- quette University, where he earned his Master’s Degree.
This year, five graduating seniors were presented schol- arships. Those students are Jeremy Frederique, who will attend Florida A & M Uni- versity; Serena Grant, who will attend the University of Tampa; Johnique Jackson, who will continue her educa- tion at Hillsborough Commu- nity College; Juwan Livingston, who has been accepted at Stetson Univer-

enrolled at the University of Central Florida.
The students chosen as re- cipients of the scholarship must maintain a grade point average of 2.5. Those students are eligible for scholarship worth $425 to $600 per se- mester. The scholarship cov- ers a four-year period.
In addition to graduating seniors, 15 continuing stu- dents were also awarded scholarships. They are: Krys- tal Bobo, Clarke University; A’leshia Campbell, Ciara Carr, Alandra Sheffield, Tyra Smart, and Ayisha Smith, all attending Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

For nearly 20 years, stu- dents have earned degrees in law, education, social serv- ices, pharmacy, construction engineering, business, and nursing.
This year, 2015 college graduates recognized were Frederick Porter, Florida International University and

sity of South Florida. Both graduates are former recipi- ents of the scholarship.
Ms. Nadine Liv- ingston, Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, said, “In this economy, sufficient funds for each student can be a challenge.” To ensure avail- able funding for the program, Ms. Livingston also over- sees a golf tournament and a theatrical production to en- sure availability of funds.
Dr. Sam Maxwell, pas- tor of First Baptist Church of Progress Village said, “We all have a responsibility to moti- vate young members to be- come responsible citizens. The church must do more than ‘talk the talk’; it must also lead by DOING.”
