Retired Educator, Popular Socialite Passes
Mrs. Martha Hewitt Kennedy, a retired educator and popular socialite, passed away Tuesday night. She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Kennedy’s son, Attorney Hewitt Smith, said his mother suffered a heart attack and passed away in a local hospital.
A Tampa native, Mrs. Kennedy spent 37 years in the school system as a teacher of Science, Typing and Busi- ness Education.
She enjoyed attending so- cial events and mingling with others. She was a member of Tampa’s Las Damas Social Club for over 50 years. And, she was a member of the Na- tional Council of Negro Women (NCNW).
Very active in her church, St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, she was on the board of Catholic Charities and was the first African American President of the Catholic Women’s Group, serving two terms.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Kennedy is also sur- vived by a daughter, Sandry Kate Williams of Atlanta, GA, and other family mem- bers.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at press time, however, Atty. Smith said the family is looking to have services on Saturday, October 6th, with a wake service the Friday evening before.
