The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into a shooting that claimed the life of 17- year-old Jayquon John- son. The shooting took place on New Year’s Day at a home in Valrico. The Sheriff’s Of- fice said they were conferring with the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Of- fice.
The First Annual Tampa Bay SoulFest event took place Sunday, January 15th, and featured Brian McK- night, Johnny Gill, and Al B. Sure.
Voice The Movement, In- corporated (VTM) hosted a boys’ empowerment work- shop entitled FEARLESS: The Workshop at the Springhill Park Community Center, (1000 Eskimo Av- enue.
Several members of the community were honored at the inaugural “Live The Dream Legacy” Dinner and Gala.

Clarence Fort, Frank Bell and Freddie Jean Cusseaux received the Legacy Award. Mrs. Gwen- dolyn Hayes, Florida Sentinel Bulletin Editor and NFL Hall of Famer, Derrick Brooks, were Co- Grand Marshals for the MLK Parade.
Alumni of Talladega Col- lege were upset to learn that the band had accepted an in- vitation to participate in the 2017 Inauguration Parade for President-Elect Donald Trump.
John Legend was cho- sen as the keynote speaker for The Black, Brown & Col- lege Bound Luncheon.
Earl Bedford was rec- ognized as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ ‘Hero Of The Game’ when the Bucs played the Carolina Panthers at Raymond James Stadium. Bedford graduated from Robinson High School and attended Florida A&M Uni- versity, where he played baseball.
Mackelle Lemon Bur- nett, 41, died after being shot during a home invasion on December 28th. His wife, Mrs. Temeka Latrice Burnett, died 13 days later.
Fannie Harris Rodgers, a popular musi- cian who was also active in the community, died Tues- day, January 10, 2017, fol- lowing complications with her heart.
The Hillsborough County School District Board mem- bers named a new elemen- tary school in honor of Attorney Warren Hope Dawson.
A former Florida A & M Drum Major and Vietnam veteran died following a brief illness. Mr. Rubin “Mar- tin” Robinson was 69- years-old.
The Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners hired Ms. Cheryl Howell to serve as the new Afford- able Housing Director.
Five people were chosen as nominees for the Florida State Fair Authority’s Wall of Diversity. The nominees were: Mrs. Doretha Edge- comb, Dr. Thomas Scott, Attorney Warren Daw- son, Paul Palacios, and Mrs. Pasty Sanchez.
Master Patrol Officer Susan Bowers retired from the Tampa Police Depart- ment after 21 years of service.

The Belmont Heights Alumni Association hosted the “Coach Billy Reed Lead- ership Fundraiser Dinner.”
The dinner honored Coach Billy Reed and reunited members of the 1973 All-Star Baseball Team. Members of that team were: Darryl Mitchell, Harold Mur- phy, Michael Welch, An- thony Gervin, C. Blythe Andrews, III, Albert Jenkins, Brice Maddox, Darwin McNish, Lemuel James, George Crum, Steward Gaines, Bobbie Graham, Quinton Kincey, the late Cleo Stin- yard, and the late Marlon James.
Mrs. Doretha Wynn Edgecomb and Ms. Pasty Sanchez were chosen as the honorees for the 2016 Florida State Fairgrounds Wall of Diversity African
American inductee.
Mrs. Chloe Coney re- tired as the District Director for U. S. Representative Kathy Castor. She served in the position for 10 years.
Florida Chief Judge Jorge Labarga announced former Senator Arthenia Joyner as one of the State Supreme Court choices to serve on the 2017 Florida Constitution Revision Com- mission (CRC). The Commis- sion is created every 20 years to review the Florida Consti- tution and make proposals directly to voters.
Mrs. Martha F. Kin- sey, a longtime Tampa edu- cator passed following a brief illness. She was 71-years-old.
Bishop J. Drew Sheard, of Detroit, head- lined the 50th Annual Holy Convocation of the Jurisdic- tion of Southwestern Florida of the Church of God in Christ, where Bishop Matthew Williams serves as the Jurisdictional Prelate.

tor made special presenta- tions to three local community leaders as part of her Annual Congressional Record entry. The three hon- orees were: Ms. Deborah Gano, Alton White, and Ms. Theresa Manuel, posthumously.

Tampa Police Sgt. Jef- frey L. Wilks died after a brief illness. He was 54.
Tampa gospel singer Robert Lewis, Jr., died. He was 85-years-old.
Mayor Bob Buckhorn
put rumors to rest after he announced he would not seek the Office of Governor for the State of Florida. Ini- tially, Mayor Buckhorn would not confirm or deny the rumors.
Rubin E. Padgett was chosen as the recipient of the coveted Ellisworth G. Sim- mons Good Government Award. The Ellisworth G. Simmons Good Government Award was established in 1996 to recognize an individ- ual or group of individuals who have played a significant role in improving govern- ment through leadership and vision.
Jamal Cherry was serv- ing as a Rig Engineer at the ConocoPhillips Company in Anchorage, Alaska.
A two-member team rep- resenting the University of Tampa competed in a debate. Ms. Nzinga Lowe and Rahal Wijewardenewho won the Southeast Regional Bioethics Bowl.
