‘No Smoking’ In Effect At Some Tampa Housing Complexes
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Earlier this week, the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), proposed to ban smoking in their residential properties. If the proposal is approved, it would prohibit smoking in nearly 700,000 public housing complexes throughout the na- tion.
The summary of the HUD proposal stated, “This pro- posed rule would require each public housing agency (PHA) administering public housing to implement a smoke-free policy. Specifically, this rule proposes that no later than 18 months from the effective date of the final rule, each PHA must implement a policy pro- hibiting lit tobacco products in all living units, indoor com- mon areas in public housing, and in PHA administrative of- fice buildings (in brief, a smoke-free policy for all public housing indoor areas).
“The smoke-free policy must also extend to all outdoor areas up to 25 feet from the housing and administrative of- fice buildings.”
The purpose of the pro- posal is to improve indoor air quality in the housing, benefit the health of public housing residents and PHA staff, re- duce the risk of catastrophic fires, and lower overall mainte-
nance costs.
HUD officials cited health
reasons, fire damage, and low- ering maintenance and clean- ing costs of the units.
Ms. Lillian Stringer,
spokesperson for the Tampa Housing Authority said, “We are already ahead of the pro- posal. We are already working in that direction. All of the buildings at Encore and Cedar Pointe are smoke free.
“In addition to the health issues, it is a cost saving meas- ure. When people move, the nicotine must be cleaned from the units.”
HUD Accepting Public Comment On Smoking Ban
